Make Green Line a Park 4 All Cypriots to Enjoy

Postby humanist » Fri Nov 24, 2006 8:55 am

Ladies and gentlemen when I look around what do I see on the edge of Nicosia? I see a paradise where nature has been allowed to take its course largely undisturbed since 1974. It’s a wonderful resource for any city to have a lung such as this, a place where people can go out and walk and play, search for mushrooms and wild fruit, picnic with their families… Nicosia is lucky to have such a resource. And yet nobody comes. We all know why. This is the buffer zone… But even if the men with guns had gone away, it would until recently have been dancing with death for the Nicosians and their children and their dogs to come here and walk and play and look for fruit and mushrooms. An anti personnel mine is triggered by a footstep. [When] the great day dawns that the parties of Cyprus reach agreement and the soldiers guarding the buffer zone melt away, then the people of Nicosia will be able to come here and breath the clear air safe and free… Later on in this morning ceremony we plan to blow up some symbolic last mines… [T]hinking about it now, it seems to me right, that we should experience at a safe distance the dreadful explosive power of the mine and think, there, but for the grace of God, go I.”

That would be a splendid scenario 'humanist', unfortunately such purity would not occur to the governments and controlling media, I am sure that everyone is fully aware of the lies and deception which permeates everything we are allowed to become privy to. Our opinions are subject to the information we receive through these channels and thus ensure that people are kept, nicely poised, to snipe at each other at every opportunity. If such civilised communication as you suggest was implemented, it would not suit the politicians primarily because they would all soon become an unnecessary burden to a peaceful community. I personally, always look for 'Hidden Agendas' and feel that the ultimate aim, regardless of what we are told, is to divide the island and create two states, it has been done to so many other countries in the past, it would ensure that the political situation would remain intact on both sides. The fact that the people may live in harmony is of little consequence in the halls of power.
I have travelled extensively and found that people everywhere are quite amiable until they are stirred up by the
governing bodies, regardless of culture, politics or religion, we are all humanists at heart, unfortunately we are not allowed to demonstrate our humanity, it may lead to the wonderful fruition of what you propose.

Thank you Eliko ...... if you are interested in peace love and harmony I recomend a great book called Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch he speaks of what you have just said that politicians perpetuate political agends so they can exist, doctors perpetuate authority so they can exist.

The quote above is not mine I got it from the news online. I don't want to take someone else quote.... but would love to see Cyprus Unitied and people living in harmony. The thing is we can do it if we all chose.

imagine if every refugee from north n south decided to return home what can they really do if this is a voluntary return...... they'll not succeed not with Cyprus in EU and Turkey wanting join the Eu the people will walk if they choose too.

Elko do not give up man if you want to show your humanity do it. Join an organisation organise a rally for the two communities to join hands and walk the length of the Green Zone. From one end to the other, remember ther are no landmines anymore.

It would be so nice to see that day come that you talk about, humanist. Peace can happen, look at East & West Germany. That day came there.

Thank you for the encouragement. It is beyond my comprhension that East/West Germany managed to Unify why can't Cyprus.

THe following excerpt came from www.cpa.org.au/garchve06/128morphou.html

""We have to put behind us the past that separates us and look into the future that unites us. The people of Cyprus, Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, must live together in a state that respects and secures all human rights and basic freedoms. Freedom of movement, freedom of residence and property need to occur… "Our children have the right and we have the obligation to offer our children a reunited and prosperous Cyprus. Our strong belief is that the communities in Cyprus, Greek Cypriots… Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins should live in condition of security, prosperity, respect and mutual understanding in a reunited Cyprus… We seek a state of law for all Cypriot people irrespective of language, religion, colour or nationality."
