300,000 euro for her property in Larnaca
An action brought against the Republic of Cyprus at the ECHR by a Turkish Cypriot in respect of her properties in Larnaca has rattled the Greek Cypriots. Now that the European Court of Human Rights has accepted the case, the Greek Cypriot side has begun to seek an exit strategy. They are trying to broker an out of court settlement involving the payment of 300,000 euro to 83-year-old Nezire Sofi, who now lives in Britain. Nezire Sofi’s properties in Larnaca consist of two houses and two plots. Sofi, having made an unsuccessful claim for these properties from the Greek Cypriot administration in 2004, has applied to the ECHR without exhausting domestic remedies. The Greek Cypriot side has consented to an “amicable settlement” but is trying to ensure that this does not set a precedent for the remaining Turkish Cypriots. A total of ten Turkish Cypriot suits are currently filed with the ECHR.
