Turkish Cypriot dialect under official attack

Postby Tim Drayton » Fri Oct 09, 2009 11:10 am

Yeni Düzen reports

http://www.yeniduzen.com/detay.asp?a=12936&z=19

that the media regulation body known as the ‘Supreme Broadcasting Board’ has called on the media and press not to give space to “publications and broadcasts which corrupt our beautiful Turkish with the incorrect form of expression known as the Cypriot dialect.” This announcement has provoked uproar from opposition politicians.

Some comments quoted by the newspaper:

Ferdi Sabit Soyer (CTP)

Why should anyone be ashamed of their own country’s dialect?

Serdar Denktaş (DP)

While the Supreme Broadcasting Board bans the Cypriot dialect, it has nothing to say about the use of even more corrupted dialects. What has suddenly happened to make us ashamed of saying oraşta and buraşta [dialect words meaning ‘there’ and ‘here’] or of saying giderkana [dialect form meaning ‘while going’]? What has happened? This is our dialect. Politicians undoubtedly take care to speak correctly but the use of the Cypriot dialect on television programmes is absolutely normal so that this custom may be passed on to new generations.

Mehmet Çakıcı (DTP)

These decisions amount to a policy to destroy Turkish Cypriot culture.

Pretty spot on Freedoulla.

The World's Greatest and Most Beautiful Language, English, has evolved from the ground up, from the People.

The state controlled languages of Gr and Tr in CY must accomodate both the CY dialects, for those who wish to use them.

Defend the tissy dialect.

Tim, there r DJs/programmers that intentionally degenerate the TC dialect. The recommendation of Supreme Broadcasting Board is to avoid degenerating TC dialect not banning it's correct usage.

Otherwise it would lead banning all TCs(especially Denktaş, Soyer, Eroğlu who all talk with TC dialect) talking at any radio or Tv station.

I fully endorse moves to safeguard and preserve the free usage of the "Turkish-Cypriot" dialect. :D

The surest way to preserve this dialect is to prevent Turkish being one of the OFFICIAL languages on Cyprus.

That would ensure the TCs would not be corrupted by Turkish and can carry on using their TC dialect freely at home, socially etc etc. :D

(NB .. dialects are not acceptable as OFFICIAL languages, so you see you are stuck supporting my plan, again 8) )

[Greek as the only official language in Cyprus; with full support for the free usage of any other worldly language, dialect, creole or pidgin ... acrolect, mesolect or basilect plus any continuum structures]

Under the ROC the T/Cs would have been a thriving community, sharing in the wealth of the ROC and enjoying the safeguards and priveleges of EU citizenship. Now look. Diminished, marginalised, over-run and subject to Turkish humiliation, harassment and contempt.

You have sown the seed now you must reap the harvest.

The Turks have done a pretty good job of clearing out the T/Cs. It's their speciality after all. Stick them in an enclave, "protect" them with 40,000 troops, over-run them with settlers, then ban their language. And hardly a word of protest.
