After 36 years in the EU, the UK still LOVES paying fines!

“Britain has set aside nearly £300m to cover fines and potential fines from Brussels over irregularities in monitoring European regional aid.
The Department for Communities and Local Government reveals in its annual report that it has made "repayments" of £40m in the last year and made contingent liabilities of up to £284m. This marks a rise of £74m from earlier in the year when officials were forced to admit the scale of the problem.”

EU to reprimand UK spending
“BRUSSELS - The European Commission is set to trigger legal action against the UK over an excessive budget deficit, pressing London to cut the deficit below the EU's 3 percent of GDP limit by March next year.
But the legal action would amount to no more than a public reprimand as EU fines in this area are limited to eurozone members.”

EU fines glassmakers €487m for cartel
“EU antitrust regulators today fined glass makers Asahi, Guardian, Pilkington and Saint-Gobain €487m for running an illegal price fixing cartel.
The European Commission accused the companies of conspiring to coordinate price hikes and taking other actions to control prices for flat glass used in construction through illegal meetings from early 2004 to early 2005.
The four companies hold a combined 80% share of the European flat glass market, which was worth €1.7 billion in 2004, according to the European Commission.”

NB: This thread is dedicated to Jimbo (who runs the brit-ignoramous.com forum) who laughed at Cyprus being fined by the EU for various offences.
The Badger/Fox debacle is in a dedicated "British cruelty to animals" thread which I need to find.
