TRNC PRESIDENT TALAT BLAMED GREEK CYPRIOT FANATICS FOR THE INCIDENTS AT THE YESILIRMAK GATE

President Mehmet Ali Talat has blamed Greek Cypriot fanatics for the incidents that took place at the Yesilirmak Crossing point on Wednesday.
“I do not blame any Greek Cypriot politician for what happened at Yesilirmak Gate”, the President said during a visit to some villages in the Kyrenia (Girne) District yesterday

Commenting on the cancellation of a meeting that was scheduled to take place between Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and him yesterday following the incidents at the Yesilirmak Gate, the President said `I do not blame any Greek Cypriot politician for what happened at Yesilirmak passageway. We have received information that certain Greek Cypriot fanatics intended to sabotage the occasion`.

However, he reminded that the religious ceremony scheduled to take place at the Ayios Mamas Church in Guzelyurt was held as planned.
The President also stressed that no link should be established between the annual trip of Greek Cypriots to Guzelyurt for religious ceremonies at the Ayios Mamas and the crossing of the TRNC citizens to the Erenkoy village.

He reminded that Erenkoy was within the TRNC territory and that the trips were being realised under the escort of the United Nations.
Commenting on accusations made by the Greek Cypriot Administration about Wednesday’s incident, he said `We complied with the agreement reached on procedure. It’s not true that we didn’t apply the procedure. We took all the measures to ease their crossing`.

Reactions and evaluations on the Greek Cypriot Administration’s decision to postpone yesterday’s meeting between the two leaders as well as the incident created by Greek Cypriots at the Yesilirmak crossing point are continuing.

The opposition Republican Turkish and Social Democrat Parties were the latest to comment on the issue.

The Leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party Ferdi Sabit Soyer said that forces which opposed a settlement in Cyprus were seeking ways to disrupt the ongoing process, especially at a time when Turkey’s latest EU progress report was being prepared.

Pointing out that the second round of talks which had been scheduled to start yesterday had not taken place because of the incidents that took place at the Yesilirmak crossing point, the CTP leader said that statements made by the Muhtar of Pyrgo village had revealed that the incident was part of a plan aimed at disrupting the talks.

Underlining the importance of further advance progress achieved by the two leaders at the end of a year of talks, Soyer called on all political parties, civil society organizations and media, irrelevant of their views or ideologies, to work towards reducing what he said were artificially created tensions.

Stressing that such efforts waged by forces opposing a settlement will not benefit anyone, the CTP leader pointed out the United Nations and the European Union should not be tricked by these games.

Meanwhile, the opposition Social Democrat Party evaluated the developments with its own perspective.

The leader of the Social Democrat Party Mehmet Cakici expressed the view that TRNC authorities had created unnecessary difficulties for the Greek Cypriots who tried to cross through the Yesilirmak crossing point to take part in a religious ceremony in Guzelyurt.

Pointing out that the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias had refused to take part in yesterday’s second round meeting, Cakici evaluated both developments as the result of the two sides’ insincerity towards the talks.

Underling the need to reach a settlement in Cyprus, the TDP leader called on both sides not to be infatuated and stuck on unnecessary details.

Cakici also said that Christofias’s decision to postpone yesterday’s meeting by citing the incident as an excuse only served to strengthen policies of opposition between the two sides.

He said that a solution in Cyprus will only be possible through good-will exercised by both sides.

Forget the information this and information that.

It was a VERY simple goal:

Get 500 odd people from A to B for some church service. Period!

The buses should’ve driven STRAIGHT THROUGH, no ifs and no buts, just as was done a month earlier for Tcs heading for Kokkina.

YOU FAILED.
