Turkish Cypriot Oral History Project
(Dr. Jan Asmussen)

The historical development in Cyprus has brought considerable changes to the lives of both Turkish and Greek Cypriots during the past 50 years.

People have experienced several changes in Administration, Civil Wars and Wars. Many were forced to leave there original hometowns and villages. Others left the Island for other destinations in Europe and Oversees. During a project carried out during the late 1990th it came apparent that the life stories of Cypriots are extremely divert and rich and that it is of utmost importance to preserve this narratives.[1]

Turkish Cypriots at the age of 60 and above have a memory of living under the British Empire, the Cyprus Republic, the Provisional Turkish Cypriot Administration, The Turkish Federate State of Cyprus and – at present – in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Those above 70 can even remember the Second World War, many of them even served in the British Army and might have experienced various theatres of war around the globe.

There stories are mostly extremely valuable for the understanding of Cypriot history and there stories are in danger to get lost.

The purpose of this is project which started in 2003 is to provide for an Oral History Archive in Northern Cyprus. The Oral History Archive provides present and future scholars on Cyprus with vital information about the collective memory of Turkish Cypriots. It can especially serve as rich fountain of sources for future Master- and PhD-research.

I thought that Sevgül Uludağ had been tirelessly devoting herself to just such a project for many years, the fruits of which are available to all through the columns of the Yeni Düzen newspaper.

She is dealing only with missing persons stories and only stories from 63-74 but this projects covers from British time .
how TC's and GC's involved in first and second world war . How they were fighting for British empire during second world war . How they were living together . Why many Turkish Cypriots left the island to immigrate to Turkey when the Cyprus hand change from Ottomans to British empire.
How people are involved during the British time about local govern system.
and so on 1957-58 clashes up to 74 events . etc.... etc.....

Still people are existing and they knows all about those times they are trying to collect them as written documents because history is running away .
