The Brits' Eye-View of the Cyprus Problem .....

Postby Oracle » Fri Aug 01, 2008 5:53 pm

How does the average Brit view the struggle the GCs are under to preserve their country and regain control from the occupying Turkish Army?

Seems that some “typical” Ex-Pat Brits are just here for what they can get and sod the natives' struggle for freedom. The north of Cyprus might as well be a separate country as far as some are concerned:

http://www.cyprus-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=19152

Certainly it is viewed as a “side” ... the “North” and it might as will be recognised as part and parcel of Turkey:

SSBubbles wrote: .. myself and Webbo are planning a few days over the North side soon. Looking forward to it!

It is simply the north of Cyprus or the occupied area . This has been discussed before and I know this Ex-Pat is familiar with the difference (though will probably plead ignorance). It seems to me there is a casual disregard of a serious situation.

Do other Brits feel like this?

SSBubbles wrote: .. I was hoping for more like 'When in Rome' etc so I want to try traditional Turkish food - washed down with oozes of Raki and Efes!

So if the typical Ex-Pat Brit wants a taste of Turkey, do they think it is simply convenient to just cross the green line without having to go to the trouble of flying to the "real" Turkey?

Are our fellow Ex-Pats living in the RoC, with us in our struggle, or against us?

I am hoping you are the exception, apart from the few who have chosen to live in the "other side" ....

Pass the buck regarding a defence to your wanton disregard for the occupation of the north, since you appear to lack one.

Be certain GCs would be asked the same if they described the north of Cyprus in terms tantamount to being a part of Turkey. So you are just being treated equally, no discrimination.

Btw ... no GCs have done such a thing, so you are alone. Many TCs also would not do such a thing.

I simply hope you are the only Brit living in the RoC who thinks like this.

well, lots of people go to cyprus to try greek food, don't have a problem with that. i don't mind brits who complain abut cyprus, that's fine.

my only problem with brits are the ones who put greed before morals and buy greek cypriot land in the north and then start mouthing off ankara propoganda at greek cypriots.

Well here we go

Once again RichardB leaving himself open t a shooting down from both, nay all, sides of the forum but some Brits got to reply so I suppose it might as well be me

Firstly am I an ex-pat Well I suppose technically I am not as I am at present living in the UK -But for around 12 years out of the last 30 I was so I consider myself to be suitably qualified as an ex-pat

Have I travelled to the North of Cyprus?-Yes a few times to the north part of Nicosia only I have not travelled extensively and have only been over for a few hours at a time.

So Why did I go? Mainly out of curiosity-To go somewhere I had not had the chance to visit before-To see what it was like and see for myself any apparent difference in the 2 areas. Also my wife who as I am sure forum members are aware is a GC, Wanted to see a place she had not hadhe chance to see since childhood.

My Opinion I was treated very well as was my wife but to be honest I wouldnt have expected anything else.
I did not see any great evidence of military activity-but I was only in the town centre so I didnt expect to.
The people found to be no different fron the people in the free areas.

Would I go again? To be honest I'm not sure,- the answer would be probably no,- not while the present situation exists with a regime in place wich is keeping people apart and away from their homes for 34 years.

The question was also asked Are ex pat Brits just here for what they can get
If I can switch that round slightly to When I Move back out will it be for what I can get

Then again if I am honest then Yes it will be for what I can get.

For the quality of life I can get

To get the chance again to live with people who care about the family and there values

To get the chance again to breath the fresh mountain air each morning

To Get the chance to say to my Grandchildren 'This is my life and I love it'

So yes it will be for what I can get

But I would love this to be under ther the banner of 1 Cyprus with 1 flag with 1 anthem

And yes I do back the ROC in the struggle for their freedom from the Turkish aggressor and I long for the day when the north is no longer a provence of Turkey but united with the south under the banner of a free Cyprus.

Well ther you go I've laid it on the line and thoroughly now expect to get shot down but the question was asked and I answered

Regards

People can go to Cyprus and have Greek food or Chinese food or Indian food ... no problem ... none of those countries have ethnically cleansed 200,000 natives and kept them from their homes with 40,000 troops.

And if a Turk should have been given legal residence in the RoC as other immigrants, and he opens a Turkish restaurant, by all means have the food. But it does not turn that place into part of Turkey.

I had not appreciated that some Brits may have difficulty grasping that a section of the country is illegally occupied and declared illegal by the UN ... Why is it so difficult for some to respect the decisions of the UN, if not the Cypriots?

They may wish to visit the occupied section, as is their right by the agreements in place. But it does not give them the right to describe the place in terms of it already being one and the same, and part of Turkey.

Granted people can make mistakes especially when new to the island, but one would expect a little more sympathy to the situation from long term residents.

Richard thank you for allaying many fears. A most balanced response and in fact what I presumed most Brits living (or pending) in the RoC would feel and do ... myself included.

Regarding being in Cyprus for "what they can get" .... I did qualify that with and "sod the natives" ... which is not your view I am pleased to note.

Human beings, being mere mortals, have to look after themselves first, I understand, but if they can avoid detriment to their fellow neighbours, they usually do. As you have shown ample consideration towards.

As I flit from Cyprus to Britain I do not find that my loyalties are incompatible.

I really feel for the suffering the UK is going through; juggling so many ethnicities, and in that I see a mirroring of the invasion in Cyprus.

Indeed my forecast is that Britain may well face the same call for a separate state for its ethnic Muslim minorities that do not wish to integrate but want to make a home from home. :(

Oracles there are some Brits who actually care about the current situation in Cyprus. The majority on the other hand couldn't give a hoot. Pathetic really. I been to the occupied area on two accounts curiosity and secondly I thought you know what you can't keep me away from my country you Turkish Atilla.

People in the occupied areas were very lovely towards me and my parents, perhaps it was the fact we were escorted by a TC friend from Xeros, who knows. Did we feel 100% comfy no. Will I go again No. Will freedom come YES.

I'm not a Brit, so I cannot speak for them, but I think that the question you state is mainly a problem of how the "Cyprus problem" is reflected all over the world,
In countries like mine (with no Cypriots at all) people thinks that in fact the North IS PART OF TURKEY!!! I have explained to my friends several times that the occupied area is not a province or something but a "Country without law" not belonging to any other state and not being recognized by anyone, but this is not what you read in our press when (occasionally) news from Cyprus are published.
