The Republican Turkish Party and Greek Cypriot AKEL Party have said they would continue to support the efforts being waged by the two leaders in Cyprus towards bringing about a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The announcement was made by the two parties at the end of their discussions at the AKEL headquarters in South Cyprus.

At the end of Tuesday’s discussions, AKEL Party Spokesman Andros Kiprianu said that officials from the two parties held discussions on work being carried out by 13 technical committees and working groups established to prepare the ground for fully-fledged negotiations on the Cyprus issue.

`We have voiced our hope that the committees and groups will reach the sufficient level and the two leaders will start direct negotiations` he said.

For his part, the CTP General Secretary Omer Kalyoncu said they reviewed the work carried out by technical committees and working groups and the new proposals on the table.

`The objective of the two parties is to help the two leaders and to make joint efforts when problems arise` he said.

Mr Kalyoncu said he was pleased with the progress achieved at the working groups and technical committees.

Reminded by a journalist that Mr Kiprianu said earlier that no progress was achieved by the committees, Mr Kiprianu said `relative progress was achieved by working groups but I cannot say the same thing about the technical committees`.

For his part, Mr Kalyoncu responded the question by saying that `we should see the glass half full`.

Noting that proposals have been brought and are still being brought on the table, he reminded that the task of the committees is not to draw final conclusions but to prepare the ground for talks.

`For this reason, we can say that some progress was achieved` he added.
