The single, united, democratic, one-man one-vote, Republic for Cyprus

Ok, so we've had the vote and the "Single, united, democratic, one-man one-vote, Republic" has clearly won as the preferred method for the political future of Cyprus.

A number of people have since asked... "How do you implement this?", or how do you get the momentum going in Cyprus?

As with everything in life, education is the key to introducing a new product or service, and I say "new" because one of the greatest misconceptions of 20th century Cyprus is the notion that the 1959 London/Zurich agreements were based on a “democratic republic” but in reality it was nothing short of an undemocratic and racist ethnic arrangement destined for disaster…

In this thread I will attempt to expand on the principle of democracy and suggest ways of how it can be implemented in Cyprus, but hopefully with the assistance of all other interested members of the forum.

I'll kick-start this thread with my favorite attempt to define a modern democracy, and putting aside any irrelevant criticisms of American foreign policy, which comes from the US Department of State, on this webpage…

All democracies are systems in which citizens freely make political decisions by majority rule. But rule by the majority is not necessarily democratic: No one, for example, would call a system fair or just that permitted 51 percent of the population to oppress the remaining 49 percent in the name of the majority. In a democratic society, majority rule must be coupled with guarantees of individual human rights that, in turn, serve to protect the rights of minorities--whether ethnic, religious, or political, or simply the losers in the debate over a piece of controversial legislation. The rights of minorities do not depend upon the goodwill of the majority and cannot be eliminated by majority vote. The rights of minorities are protected because democratic laws and institutions protect the rights of all citizens.

please read, and tell me where this proposal fails to give us a Unitary State, as well as our rights as persons.

...beside the definitions for a "BBF" that seem frozen by intransigence, locked on to a "Greek" or "Turkish" interpretation, please detail how this solution is not Bicommunal or Bizonal.

What does your current communist "government" think of the "One man one vote" results you "achieved" in this forum GR?

Is this what AKEL is working on or have they realised that it is impossible to get sole control of the whole of Cyprus with the "one man one vote" crap and are working on something else?

GR, time for you "intellectuals" to put your heads together and dream up something new, no one is buying the "one man one vote" crap. :lol:

At the bottom of the link is what I think is pretty good summary of a democratic system
"THE PILLARS OF DEMOCRACY
Sovereignty of the people.
Government based upon consent of the governed.
Majority rule.
Minority rights.
Guarantee of basic human rights.
Free and fair elections.
Equality before the law.
Due process of law.
Constitutional limits on government.
Social, economic, and political pluralism.
Values of tolerance, pragmatism, cooperation, and compromise."

I would have liked to have seen free speech and a free press in this.

To which I would add that any constitution isn't set in stone. It must be able to evolve to meet a changing world and changing expectations. The US constitution with its many amendments is of course a good example of a changing constitution. Something which dogged the 1960 CY constitution, so any new RoC constitution must be capable of change without the nonsences of 60-63.

Eric, one of the beauties of Democracy is that it will destroy Greek nationalists’ dream of ENOSIS with Greece, just as it will destroy Turkish nationalists’ dream of ENOSIS with Turkey… so I can understand you spitting the dummy in ever-increasing amplitude! :lol:

I have to agree with Nikitas that the current BBF negotiations will fail miserably it's just a matter of time, leaving just one option left for Cyprus...
