Postby halil » Wed Jan 23, 2008 9:37 am

The Committee for Missing Persons in Cyprus has announced that it will be handing over the remains of positively identified 6 missing Turkish Cypriots and 8 Greek Cypriots to their families in the coming days.

The Committee also announced that it has started to personally notify the families of the 14 identified missing persons on arrangements concerning the remains.
Commenting on the issue, the Turkish Cypriot Member of the Committee Gulden Plumer Kucuk said that excavations were continuing across the island uninterrupted.

She reminded that each family in addition to the remains of their loved ones was given a DNA and pathology report as well as 2.400 USD for burial expenses.

Ms. Kucuk also said that identified missing persons will be buried by the respective families in private ceremonies.
The latest process brings the total number of missing persons identified to 71.

According to official figures, there are a total of 1,970 missing persons - 502 Turkish Cypriots and 1,468 Greek Cypriots- who went missing between 1964-1974.

It will be helpfull for a future reconciliation to document as to how these people were executed...Yes executed...People need to be accountable for their actions...The only way forward is to face the truth...Only then we can move forward...

May they rest in peace...

This process is going to take along time. There are specific spots where many people are buried and it does not pay to have these sites found. Several hundred prisoners were executed in one spot alone in the Famagusta district and buried there. Finding this spot will cause some hard questions to be posed by even the closest allies of Turkey. So do not expect fast progress on this.

Boomers....You have the story of what EOKA did and people being killed and buried. If you can't hazard a guess then you are just turning away from the truth.......The figures that Piratis kept repeating, until he was put in his place, did not make sense and these do....I know it's hard to take but the truth is there and you are afraid to look it in the eyes because of the end result you want. That does not justify denial.........If trut is what you want then face it and cry for it...
