TODAY in 1963:

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

TODAY in 1963:

Postby denizaksulu » Fri Dec 21, 2007 8:23 pm

Today in 1963. Do we have short memories or are we trying to forget?

Today all those years ago was the day that changed my life forever. The event which took place then, kept me from my home in my village for 44 years. Like me thousands of other TCs were made homeless and turned in to refugees like the GCs later in 1974.

I am surprised that the pages of this forum are silent on this shameful chapter in the history of Cyprus. I know the arguments are exhausted and forever going around in circles.

Let us give a thought to all who have lost their lives their homes and country. May we never see such times again.

Lets have peace.

In our part of the island the events that started today in 1963 are known as a Turko-mutiny. The most patriotic of our radio stations was on about this early this morning and the hate that was sput out was enough to cover Cyprus from one end to the other. This is the Sigma radio tv station and Lazaros Mavros was the journalist. This is the station that supports Papadopoulos fervently and bore the brunt of the "no" vote in 2004.

We call it tomato(Turkish Accent) you call it tomato(Greek accent). All debated before. What you say about the radio station is surprsing but then their is freedom of speech. It doesnt take much to keep the 'hatred' alive. Let us learn from past deeds and not go there again. Do we need jurnalists like Lazarus. He is better 6 feet under. But then we dont trust Tpapa intentions anyway.

This is a Cyprus issue Dinos. If you are worried what the non-Cypriots are laughing about, that is your problem. The Cyprus Forum is here for Cypriots of all colours as well. They might well be laughing at you. Be happy for them.

I remember the day well Deniz. My father and uncle were sitting in the kitchen listening to the radio (a black and white Sony). I was running around making noise and playing with my birthday presents and was being told to shut up a few times. I was too young (7years old) to understand what was going on.

Its fair comment as long as you use the same language to others who 'moan' and 'bitch' as you put it. You can laugh and enjoy yourself. You are welcome, you dont need my permission.

If we forget what happened in the past dont you fear that smilar mistakes will lead to similar events.

If you are that bothered , you know where the 'off' key is.

Not necessarily this day, but 1963 - 1964 changed my psyche for life. I remember being on my own along the Polis road when Turkish planes flew overhead, and fired at me. I also remember countless times hiding in my dad's banana plantation, or under spreading trees every time that too-familiar noise erupted again.

We spent months under canvas in Kyrenia to get away from the Turkish bombardments and nearly 200 local people were napalmed to an unimaginably horrendous death.
