International Conference in the TRNC

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

International Conference in the TRNC

Postby shahmaran » Sat Apr 21, 2007 1:12 am

i thought this was pretty funny in a pretty sad way...

"Warnings issued by Germany and the UN to countries not to participate in the International Conference on Natural Disasters and Emergency Situations organised in occupied Cyprus

Under the title Science did not listen to the prohibition, Turkish HURRIYET newspaper (19.04.07) publishes a report by Omer Bilge, the papers correspondent in occupied Cyprus who writes that despite the warnings issued by Germany and the United Nations which called on the countries not to participate in the International Conference on Natural Disasters and Emergency Situations organised by the TRNC, persons from 36 countries went to the occupied areas for this purpose.

The paper writes that the United Nations, which gave a plaque to the Defence Organization of the Turkish Occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus, in order to thank it for its efforts in the Pakistan earthquake, issued a warning to the UN member countries saying We gave the plaque by mistake, do not participate in the conference. As the paper writes, the United Nations announced that the plaque and the letter given by the Human Aid Coordination Office of the UN to the team of the TRNC civil defence because it participated in the 17 days of searching and rescuing works after the earthquake which took place in Pakistan in 2005 and because of its extraordinary efforts, were given by mistake and called on their members, in writing, not to participate in the conference.

Thomas Peter, deputy president of the UN office, stated in the written warning sent to the UN member countries: We gave by mistake the letter and the plaque for thanking them because of the operations during the earthquake in Pakistan. They are not valid.

The Embassy of the German EU presidency to Ankara issued a verbal warning to the self-styled ministry of foreign affairs in the occupied areas, which sent an invitation to the member countries of the EU to participate in the conference: We do not recognise you. Therefore, do not send this kind of invitations. We will call on the member countries not to participate. The paper writes that despite the warnings almost 200 scientists and representatives from 36 countries, including Germany, Japan, UK, Bulgaria and Sweden, participated in the conference. The paper also writes that speaking in the name of the Red Crescent, Ahmet Mete Isikara, reacted against the involvement of politics in the participation of foreign scientists in the conference and against the scientific works."

Well thats just pathetic man.

It would of been sad had no one showed up but since a lot of them did it was only an embarrassment for the d***heads at the UN. You would think they would just bow their heads in shame and shut the **** up

"We've made a mistake, do not participate" PLEASE! Talk about incompetent and unprofessional. What are they trying to say that they take their gratitude back? How disgraceful, petty and just downright foolish.

I'm glad they turned up!

I'm EXTREMELY glad they turned up!

Shows how there are things that are a LOT more important for people than the UN or the GC bullshit!!

What this article has somehow "failed" to translate from the original in Hurriyet, is the part about how the RoC had tried everything they possibly can to stop this scientific conference on Natural Disasters -which happens to be quite an important issue for everyone around the globe- from happening and also failed while doing so, simply because it is held in the TRNC!

Its funny to see how the priorities of some people are so worthless compared to the priorities of others, nevertheless it didn't stop them from trying!

And so they should be! What has Natural Disasters got to do with politics anyways?

Not only that it's not like their actions do anything to help them in any way. I mean lets say if no one turned up would it of been 'such' a triumph for the GCs? Well it probably would of but you know what I mean
It's not like it would of made any difference to anything. It doesn't validate the TRNC or anything.

These kinds of things only make the GC's look bad.

There are certain things that even though I (personally) might not agree with, I would never even try and argue with the GC's over, but this really isn't something that should of got the RoCs knickers in a twist!

As for the UN.....

What the Turks have to realize is that they can not create a country by means of ethnic cleansing. They commit the grossest of crimes and then they want to be treated as if they are not doing anything wrong.

Turks can organize all the conferences they want in Turkey. Cyprus belongs to Cypriots and to the Republic of Cyprus, and only the Republic of Cyprus can organize anything official as a state on this island. The TCs should understand that either they are going to be part of Cyprus or part of Turkey. Something like "trnc" or "turkish cyprus" simply does not exist, since all parts of Cyprus have a majority of Cypriots who are not of Turkish origin and they do not accept their homelands to be called "Turkish" (and nobody has the right to enforce this against their will)

To those that would politicize the International Conference, BUTT OUT!
The issue is a humantarian one and within the spirit of International Search and Rescue, politics has no place.
I was honoured to attend and share experiences within the family of International Civil Defenders during this International Conference.

Bravo Mr. Jarvis. I hope this comment is read by Germany and the RoC.
