Taken from Cyprus Today letters page- Oh yeah Happy Birthday GR....

Democracy was suspended in 1963

I was interested to read the opinion by a scribe called HajiMike, (Cyprus Mail, July 19).

In his opening paragraph he states, “Yes, there was a coup which overthrew the democratically elected government.”

Let me point out to HajiMike that there was no democratically elected government of Cyprus in 1974. The legal government under the Constitution of 1960 was overthrown by Makarios in 1963 and replaced with an all-Greek Cypriot government that gained international support thanks to Makarios being able to persuade the UN and the Secretary General U Thant that he had acted legally.

There was a coup and although the Greek Junta initiated it, it would never have happened without the support of a great number of Greek Cypriots. Were any of these people brought to trial for the murder of their fellow citizens?

Later, he says “no one had ever told me about the 1960s.” Really? HajiMike writes on a complex and controversial subject yet claims that he knows little of the 1960s.

Greek Cypriots may consider that their problem began in 1974, Turkish Cypriots know that theirs began in 1963.

As HajiMike says, “That’s why we have never moved forward, particularly as Geek Cypriots, because no one has ever publicly admitted they committed wrong.”

If a settlement is ever reached, the compensation payable to Turkish Cypriots for the years 1963-1974 will far outweigh any compensation for land acquired by both Greek and Turkish Cypriots after 1974.

Greek Cypriots may consider that their problem began in 1974, Turkish Cypriots know that theirs began in 1963.

In 1963?

This is from 1958:

This is from 1821:

During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the Ottoman authorities feared that Greek Cypriots would rebel again. Archbishop Kyprianos, a powerful leader who worked to improve the education of Greek Cypriot children, was accused of plotting against the government. Kyprianos, his bishops, and hundreds of priests and important laymen were arrested and summarily hanged or decapitated on July 9, 1821.

This is from 1570:

In the summer of 1570, the Turks struck again, but this time with a full-scale invasion rather than a raid. About 60,000 troops, including cavalry and artillery, under the command of Lala Mustafa Pasha landed unopposed near Limassol on July 2, 1570, and laid siege to Nicosia. In an orgy of victory on the day that the city fell--September 9, 1570--20,000 Nicosians were put to death, and every church, public building, and palace was looted.

But of course when you were oppressing and killing the native Cypriots there was no problem at all. And when you collaborated with the British colonialists and blackmailed Makarios and imposed on us the 1960 constidution which gave you Ottoman style privilages on our expense, again there was no problem

Medman, the accurate thing for you to say would be: "In 1963 the Cyprus Problem started for us because until then the problem has only been with the native Cypriots, who we were screwing since the day we set our foot in Cyprus".

If a settlement is ever reached, the compensation payable to Turkish Cypriots for the years 1963-1974 will far outweigh any compensation for land acquired by both Greek and Turkish Cypriots after 1974.

   First of all none of your land was "acquired" between 1963-1974. Secondly, this is a great example of how you over exaggerate your own suffering while minimizing ours. 1963-1974 is a 1 decade (during which you killed GCs and coursed suffering to us as well). 1974-2009 is 3 and a half decades, and lets not even add the centuries you had oppressed us before that.

Nothing but a handful of facts that just about caricaturize the problem on this island, enough for you to depict a false situation where we are to blame for everything, plus you go on to claim that you are not racist nor fascist

Well you are not only racist, you are also delusional and conveniently ignorant to certain parts of history and facts, also to my arguments.

Doctors call it selective amnesia, you should get that checked ;)

And Oracle, don't mind you barging in but at least take the time to read and understand what is being said woman!

Yet more empty words. Unlike you I see the whole story. For you history starts in 1963 and ends in 1974. I do know about and fully recognize your suffering during that time. So there is really no gap in my memory. You on the other hand, not only you ignore everything that happened both before and after that one decade, but you even forget the suffering and casualties you caused to us during that one decade. You also forget who started the conflict and the war which resulted in the suffering for both sides. Basically you distort and blow out of proportions a mere decade trying to use that highly selective and distorted story to excuse yet more crimes against the Cypriot people, the same crimes you have been commiting against us even before that one decade.

I am not going to reply to the rest of your baseless accusations which you again repeat without any justification. If you want to have that kind of discussion then I will leave you to Sotos, as I don't want to waste my time taking to you on such low level.
