ΤΟ ΣΩΜΑ των εκλεγέντων κληρικών και λαϊκών γενικών αντιπροσώπων, μαζί με το Σώμα των εξ οφίκιο μελών αποτελούν τα δύο Σώματα της Εκλογικής Συνέλευσης, η οποία θα αναδείξει το νέο αρχιεπίσκοπο Κύπρου. Το σώμα των εξ οφίκιο μελών αποτελείται από όλους τους μητροπολίτες και βοηθούς επισκόπους, τους ηγουμένους των παλαιών ανδρώων των μοναστηριών Μαχαιρά, Αγίου Νεοφύτου, Τροοδιτίσσης, και Χρυσορροιατίσσης, τους ηγουμένους των ανδρώων και γυναικείων μοναστηριών των οποίων ο αριθμός των μοναχών δεν είναι λιγότερος από πέντε, από δύο αξιωματούχους άγαμους κληρικούς θεολόγους κατά τα πρεσβεία χειροτονίας της Αρχιεπισκοπής και από τρεις αξιωματούχους κληρικούς θεολόγους της πόλεως Λευκωσίας και ένα αξιωματούχο κληρικό θεολόγο της πόλεως Αμμοχώστου.

Throwing a coin sounds better already! Why ask the people to vote if they can make the one that came 3rd the Archbishop?

despite the fact that the church is supposed to "belong to the believers" , do you think the priests would be willing to allow all that wealth be outside their direct control... i mean allow the believers to choose who they believe is the best to lead them? it reminds old aristocratic or colonial constitutions...(and without knowing) i assume theocratic regimes like iran...

as to the why, it would be interesting to know when the vote was introduced and under what citcumstances. i dont know, if that was the case since the church has been autocefalus. any historian around ?

at least one bishop (if not two) have serious problems with math.

You are confusing things. In Iran the religious leaders run the country. In Cyprus they just run their church.

In fact Cyprus is one of the few countries were people vote for the religious leader. For example I don't remember Catholics voting for the new Pope.

Now how much the vote of the people will count in the final result remains to be seen. If Chrysostomos becomes the Archbishop then I really see no reason why bother with elections next time.

yes i know about iran. i was only refering to how they are elected. and as i wrote, i am not sure about that either
