Essex was my second choice of uni many moons ago. It might've changed a lot since then, but back then it was small, concrete and looked a bit cack. But it is an out-of-town, campus uni and hence perhaps more "homely" or welcoming.

So it depends on many, many things.... not least what sort of person your son is (london night life every night, or...), how much money you can afford for accomodation (essex will be cheaper), quiet campus stuff etc., also reputation of uni blah blah blah.... go look round them both see what u think.

BUT whatever happens, you can't look back in life, he'll have a great time, will never know how things might've been.... so at the end of the day it doesn't really matter!

But if it was me, i'd go for city. But that's based on ME not YOUR SON. Catch my drift?.....

Is he going to do master ?
My advise he go to essex . London now very expensive . I have 3 Greece Greek Girls tenants in Liverpool street and they pay me £360 a week rent . I dont know how they can afford but they come for 1 year only and may they going back. In essex life is quiet and nice. Because he has to spend most of his time with studying essex is better. He can come to london for weekends . London life is stressfull. People are not friendly but essex is different. I lived in essex for 7 months. Chelmsford have nice clubs , rooms are cheaper and essex girls

If he need help with accomadition i have in Chelmsford some houses and in Central london as well . Kings cross £150 a week for 1 double room , i have in Clapton for £60 single room (he has to travel a bit zone 2). Chelmsford double room £80 pw .

Good luck to him .

If you ignore the expense issue, which I know is easier said than done.

City is a better uni and is looked at more favourably by employers.

I don't know why but when you say City University peoples eyes open a little wider.

Its betetr respected and has a great relationship with all the big city money establishment, Llyoys of London etc.

City is by far the better uni
my step daughter lives in chelmsford and go's to college there.
She has opted for City as Chelmsford is very much the poor relative of City.
Although London is expensive it has cheap 24hr transport and you do not need a car.
Chelmsford has poor local transport that is expensive and you really need a car.
Food is far cheaper in London a small kebab and it is small in chelmsford is around £3
In london you get a medium for £2
and thats the same with most day to day stuff is around 30% more is Chelmsford.
