A correction on basic fact: TCs are 18% not 26%. Maybe he includes the settlers in his number as well.

On the essence:

If TCs recognize ROC then they should just come and vote in the elections. Their 18% is more than enough to determine who will win the presidential elections, and if they don't like Papadopoulos they have the power to throw him out of power.

Actually I am not 100% if they can do that, since in Cyprus they (British-Turks) wanted instead of having one president voted by all Cypriots to represent all Cypriots (like it happens in all normal countries), to have a GC president voted by GCs and a TC vice-president voted by TCs. So this issue was one of the main screw ups that was forced on us right from the beginning, and the blame should go to those that insisted on such divisive elements.

The writter of toplum is absolutely right. The President should be president of all Cypriots not just the GCs.
I was shocked last night when the put down the wall at Ledras street and then erected a Cyrus flag and a Greek flag.

On the other hand they say they want the symbols of the pseudo to go away from the opening. How are they going to go away if those symbols are some illegal f;ags like the illegal Greek Flag the Roc is flying next to the Cyprus flag?

The Cypriot, thank you for your post and the link you have provided the writer of the article has captured it very well and I have sent him an e-mail expressing my support for his article and argument about a Cypriot Presidents responsibilities to all their people.

Pyrpolizer I agree with your coment about the Greek flag coming down, infact I believe that the Greek flag ought to come down from all official posts.

Well the Greek Flag is not illegal, but rather not applicable to the RoC's political domain.

Piratis that is an interesting post re: voting rights and if the Roc is serious about representing all Cypriots then that ought to change also. Who knows perhaps one day we may have a President from and Armenian speaking background.

I also disagree with the use of the greek flag in the RoC, however, in order to be accurate we need to say that the Greek flag is not used in official buildings or events of the RoC.

There are 2 cases where there is official use of the greek flag, these are:

a) the National Guard which is not the official army of the RoC but something created after 1963, and

b) on school buildings. According to the constitution education was controlled by each community and not by the RoC central government.

The RoC has a duty and a legal obligation to protect and promote the interests of all Cypriots . By not acting or at least discouraging the continued exhibition of the Greek flag , such action seen to represent Cyprus as a Greek Island , is lending itself to the propaganda by the "trnc" that indeed there are two states in Cyprus , a Greek state and a Turkish state. Effort is needed to promote Cyprus as one nation , one flag one people.

I also agree with the non display of the greek flag in Cyprus (NG and schools included). RoC is an independent state with its own symbols. period.
I think this display is either the result of "getting used to..." or a "negotiating chip" (remove the half moon flag and we´ll remove the cross).

PS i´m greek (mainlander)
