Postby Sunshine01 » Fri Mar 09, 2007 1:16 pm

Are there any washing machine experts out there? I have just taken a load of washing out and it has a weird smell, not quite like rubber but similar, the washing machine seems to be working fine but as soon as I walked into the kitchen I could smell this smell................any idea? And no funnies please........... :)

If the smell is rubbery it could be coming from the main belt driving the drum. This happens if it is worn out and keeps slipping at spin cycle..
It could also be that the smell is coming from burnt out electrical component (possibly the motor or capacitor or even the water pump)
Best to get a professional to look at it..dont try a DIY repair yourself

From your description it does sound like the belt. If you can handle a screw driver it is quick and easy to replace. New belt should be under £5. Take the back cover off the machine.(Ensure switched off at mains first) and the belt will be right in front of you.

Before you call anyone or take the machine apart, firstly check the plug and socket. Make sure the plug is not heating (remove the plug and inspect for signs of burning) and also make sure you are not using a multi plug adaptor. If the unit is connected to a permenent juction box, then start looking for a serviceman.

Thanks guys from all your replies. I thought I would try it again before calling someone out, so I cleaned the drum and the seal with bleach to get rid of the smell, which seemed to work, then washed half of the load on the 'quick wash' programme, which I never normally use, and it worked............clothes came out smelling as they should the no smell from the washing machine!! So I did the remaining loads of washing on this programme, well this morning before I was up hubby put a load on the normal wash, and again, that was fine. Do you think this could have happened if I overloaded the machine? Or may be its a warning sign that it is on the blink anyway?
