Satellite Dish!

Postby mike-d » Wed Mar 07, 2007 2:41 pm

Hi everyone.

for all the technical people out there!

How much would I expect to pay for a 2nd hand 3m satellite dish?

I definately would like to get sky tv so am looking into dish options at the moment. If anyone has sold them what sort of prices do they go for please?

Thanks,
Mike.

Where will you be based – a 3m dish may not be large enough.

Lots of people are upgrading from ~2.7m dishes to 3m or 3.2m dishes so I’d be surprised if there was a healthy second hand market.

I have a 4.2m in Nicosia, where its the minimum for sky..

I would say its getting to be the minimum anywhere other than pafos now..

Thanks for that g.man and cyprusgrump

May I bounce the same question back then but for a 4m dish!

How much would I expect to pay for a brand new, and a 2nd hand 4m satellite dish?

Just for your info too: I have a few family members in Limassol still using a 3m dish with no problems except with receiving itv.. it has to be accessed through "other channels" now instead of through normal sky menu.

Ouch! that sounds like a lot.. I heard that the price of dishes has come down quite a lot of the past few years?

Or is that a brand new dish do you know cyprusgrump?

Cheers,
Mike.

Yes, that was a new dish.

Just seen another ad for a 4.2m dish for CY£1,500.

As I said, dishes are getting bigger and bigger so while you might find a lot of second hand smaller dishes (we literally threw our 1.8m dish away) you’ll be lucky to get a cheap big dish.

Just a quickie.. but why are the dishes constantly getting bigger? Is sky reducing the "footprint"? Or are there other reasons?

I am afraid i'll disagree with that theory...The footprint is not being reduced at all...In fact it cannot be reduced once the satellite is in orbit and transmitting.
If you look at the footprint of Astra group of satellites ,Cyprus is not anywhere near any of the footprints..
Cyprus is happens to be in a "spillover area" for Astra group of satellites (spillover=Satellite signal that falls on locations outside the beam pattern's defined edge of coverage)
The occasional geostationary fluctuations of the transmitting satellites which are not noticeable in the satellites main coverage area might cause problems in spillover areas..
An example for this is the recent problems reported on channel 4 in some areas of Cyprus..

@G.Man
How is your 2D reception on 4.2m dish in Nicosia?Any channels giving you probs?
