The terms of Citizenship by Naturalisation in South.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The terms of Citizenship by Naturalisation in South.

Postby insan » Thu Jan 13, 2005 12:12 am

I wonder what are the terms of citizenship by naturalization in South and how many foreigners have been granted the citizenship of RoC in the past 30 years. I don't ask this info to compare with North or argue about its legality, just I'm asking to learn.

Hi insan,

I know only two small facts. :-(

1. you have to live there for at least 5 years I think (about all other pre-conditions I have no idea)
2. foreigners can apply for citizenship when they marry a GC, but I think only after a period of years and you have to give up your former citizenship

But don't count me on this info!

cheers, city

Insan,
Citizenship by naturalisation means one should stay here for some years ( I don't know how many I think between 5-9 years). The fact is they do not allow anyone to stay that long unless he is granted Political asylum. I know there is an increasing number of people getting political asylum lately, but anyway I don't think the number of those who got citizenship by naturalisation in the last 30 years is more that a few hundred persons.
The fact is however that most Pontians will very soon be entitled for citizenship by naturalisation, if they are not entitled already.

If you are interested to know the number of those who got citizenship by fascillitated naturalisation , i.e through marriage, this number is much greater. One out of 4 young Cypriots who studies abroad comes back with a foreign bride or groom. Approximately 3000 young GCs go abroad for studies every year,so I guess we must be having an import of about 700 brides/grooms getting citizenship through marriage every year.

Did you check the website of the department of statistics of RoC?

Thanks for the infos you've given MicAtCyp and city. I found the citizenship charter of RoC.

Acquisition of Cypriot Citizenship by Naturalisation

An application on form M.127 may be submitted by persons who live in Cyprus and who in the last 8 years before their application accumulated more than 5 years of residence or in the last 13 years more than 10 years of residence, if they are group sports players, sports technicians or coaches or work in International Business Companies, or work for Cypriot employers etc. They should attach a birth certificate, their passport, a good character certificate, 2 photographs and the publication in a Cypriot newspaper for 2 consecutive days of their intention to apply for naturalisation.
