Global warming is the real deal for Cypriots
By Stefanos Evripidou
DESPITE the ever increasing trend for every individual of driving age to own a car, a recent Eurobarometer study revealed that Cypriots and Greeks were the most concerned citizens in the EU about the effects of climate change and global warming.
According to the survey released yesterday, 93 per cent of Cypriots are either very concerned or concerned to some degree about climate change, coming second only to Greece (95 per cent) out of the EU-27. Cyprus came first, along with Estonia, regarding the total percentage of those who were ‘very concerned’ about climate change, reaching 70 per cent for the two countries.
On the use of nuclear energy, Cyprus came third highest with 76 per cent of the population against it, beaten by Austria (78 per cent) and topped by Greece (83 per cent). A total of 69 per cent of Cypriots asked, just one per cent more than Greece and seven per cent more than the EU average, believe that energy issues should be handled on a Community level, while 28 per cent believe it should remain a national issue.
Regarding renewable energy sources, 90 per cent of Cypriots support the idea of setting minimum targets for member states on the production of energy. The European Council is soon to decide on this issue, with the Commission proposing that 20 per cent of all energy production come from renewable energy sources by 2020.
According to the survey, 92 per cent of Cypriots believe they will have to change their everyday energy consumption habits to deal with the effects of climate change on energy consumption in the next 10 years, though only 27 per cent thought they would have to pay more for the energy they use as a result of climate change.
Finally, a total of 78 per cent of Cypriots said they were in favour of more suppliers of electrical energy and natural gas in the Cypriot market.

Cypriots are behind recycling, greener fuels and climate change as long as they don't build recycling plants, incinerators etc in THEIR village...... No one wants the wind farms next to their village either.
The land fill sites in Cyprus are a disgrace and antiquated. Wake up Cyprus and start taking responsibility for your own rubbish and waste. It's great that you all look good on a survey but how about some action???
