I don't know what you were talking about, but I can assure you I am not a communist neither a neo-Cypriot, and I don't have nationalistic tendencies. Why should I have, and why should I bind myself to any nation?
I just feel there exists a group in Cyprus that is more homogeneous by itself than by mixing it with Greece or Turkey.Simple really.

This can be said for every different village in Cyprus, moreover in larger countries like Turkey and Greece. the fact that we prefer our souv;a cut in pieces than the whole lamb does not make us more homogeneous. There are other things more important than the dialect...

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, and who are regarded as distinctive by those outside the group, turning the group into a "people." Ethnic groups are united by common cultural, behavioural, linguistic, ritualistic, or religious traits, usually but not always on the basis of a common genealogy or ancestry.

Venizelos,

I can assure you that the vast majority of GCs do not hate Greece. We are very proud of being Greek, although I admit that we are different from Greeks of Greece, because we are Greeks from Cyprus. Even in Greece some Greeks are very different. For example, Balkan Greeks (i.e. those who live in the Macedonian region) are very different from the Greeks of Rhodes, have different dialects and even look different. I would say GCs are very similar to the Greeks who live on the Greek Mediterranean islands, i.e. Crete, Rhodes etc. We have an almost identical dialect to Rhodes. Of course if Cyprus was competing against Greece in any competition, I would support Cyprus, because that is my island. This is obvious; for example, if Crete for whatever reason played the rest of Greece in a game of football, who would Cretans support? It does not mean that they are not Greek, but it means that are Cretan Greeks, so they will support Crete. The same applies to Cyprus.

I am surprised you even need to ask this question really. Yes, there are many neo-Cypriots on this Forum, but many of these people don't even live in Cyprus. If you look at Cyprus daily, consider the celebrations when Greece won Euro 2004, did that look like we hated Greece? Consider our celebrations on OXI day, and Greek Independence Day. Look at the many Greek flags in Cyprus and Greek football tops that Cypriots wear. GCs even consider the Greek National Anthem as theirs also! Of course there will always be a minority that dislike Greece, whether because of personal experiences or because of the Junta period etc. But these are definitely the minority. By the way, even if a GC does not like Greece; I know many English people that do not like England, but it doesn't stop them being English.

A very good post Simon. You may have seen some of my derogatory posts on Greece , but as you rightly say " I know many English people that do not like England, but it doesn't stop them being English."""

Where we differ is this. The general political and social outlook of the Greek mentality , their blind support of insignificant issues as far as the interests of their nation are concerned. I have always believed that we in Cyprus have absolutely nothing tangible to gain from closer ties with Greece. In fact our joining the European Union has diminished the need for such ties to insignificant levels . The Greeks are on the whole not a nation of " givers" but "grabbers" Their treatment of the less fortunate amongst them and especially towards their mentally disturbed is a disgrace. The general outlook to life centres around money and more money , their respect for their fellow Greeks is based on how important beneficially to them the recipient of such respect is. The Junta alone was responsible for the catastrophe of 1974 .

I also believe that our struggle in the 50s for Enosis was misguided .We are a nation of mostly Greek Cypriots but there are also Turkish Cypriots .
I also celebrated Greece's success at the European cup , but as you rightly point out supporting Cyprus against Greece in a competitive game is only natural. Are we Greeks from Greece ? Are they Greeks from Cyprus ? The resounding answer to both questions is a definite NO. Over the years have met many Greeks , in fact I learned most of my Greek by close contact with Greeks from an early age starting with college years here in the UK
and have always engaged in political discussions maintaining my position that it should be them and not us that should want closer ties , they have much to learn from our way of life .

Seems to me there is a "friendly" rivalry between Greeks and the Greek speaking Cypriots.

GCs can call Greeks "pushti...." and I've heard Greeks say "Cypriots ar Arabs that wear shoes".

I was at a wedding in England 6 years ago, and the groom's sister was married to a Cretian.. when he heard I'd moved to Cyprus.. he joked with me that "Cypriots like to do business to much and don't know how to relax "

Sometimes we all love to "hate" somebody
