Reading over these recent posts, I get the feeling that "THE SOLUTION" is some kind of magic formula that will solve everyone's problems and everyone will live happily ever after, just like in the fairytales.

Personally I think the problem is not properly defined to being with. The real problem is that the two major communities on the island have absolutely no trust for each other. The real solution is step by step trust-building so that eventually people find their way towards cooperating.

The more we buy into the legalistic bullshit that the politicians throw around, the further away we get from communal cooperation, which is what a society is made up of anyway.

I think its a difficult one..

Opening up the north would pressurise RoC to act, and gives TRNC some leverage, however, would that then take the pressure of TRNC to move forward with a solution?

Where does turkey fit in the solution apart from being absent?

Everyone wants a solution, but nobody knows how to accomplish it... or even if it is accomplishable???

:(

Gavcar, I appreciate your coments, though I disagree with some of it, actually a lot of it. I agree we need to forget about the nuber of people lost, they are not coming back. That said try and tell that to my mother and her sister who lost their brother. However, I think they would now just rather see a unified cyprus.

I know most turkish speaking cypriot land is in the south, but you guys are choosing to be living in the north and you have more rights in accessing your land than greek speaking refugees. that aside if we will unify we need to adopt the ideology one people one land one government. EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL. second the land owned by the Brits and jews is stolen land. Following that it is ludicrous that Mr Talat allows the sale of that land to jews and Brits who manipulated this whole situation to rip cyprus apart to meet their own needs. I disagree with your argument that Talat is the last chance to unification because the man in his media reports never talks about unification and I fail to see how he can be a peace maker if he threatens war on the RoC and secondly allows the sale of refugee property. On that he is really dumb at least if he waits for solution may be the turkish cypriots who end up with refugee land could actually sell it for more than $4000.

I would like to suggest that we unify under one country comprising of two equal states under a federal governemnt, I would suggest that the two states remain as they are in land mass. with the buffer zone remaining a peace, educational park and the lefkosia buffer one becoame an eduacational facility with the buildings restored etc.

after reading the post Tochni I have understood more about the safety issue concerning turkish speaking cypriots and I would suggest and I know I said it many times before a register of ho wants to return and who will be happy to accept compensation needs to be set up by trnc and Roc independenlty to be discussed at mutual common meeeting, that will give clearer idea about how many greek speakers will actually return and I think the number will be quite less than anticipated by both sides. Where possible direct exchange of propert with compensation where appropriate ought to take place, ie a greek speaker occupying turkish speakers property in lemessos to say a turkish speaker living on greek speakers land in a small village in the north the perosn with the lemessos property ought to be compensated over and above their property in the north.

secondly you talk about respecting each other, well that would begin by Talat stop illegal sale of refugee land.

turkish troops to leave immediately and replaced immediately by un forces with tough stand on no violation of turkish speaking cyp's safety.

thridly, due to the illegal sale of refugee property to jews and Brits well if they were dumb enough to conduct illegal business tough, so they do not own anything really so that solves that problem. Furthemore if they want to pursue the thieves who sld them the land in the first place well they can do that. I have no time for them. I rather concentrate on the settlers than thoise morrons like the British unethical couple whose name i can not bring to my lips they are the epidemy of a thief through and through.

I agree that Papadopoulos ought to meet with talat. Perhaps if we agree that the buffer zone becomes a peace park well they can meet there.

i think askimwos has captured it well in his last sentence, but I believe we need to start thinking about integration of the two states and that would mean that all children in cyprus learn both languages at school so that in years to come they will not have the same problems, secondly i believe that the police force, hospitals etc employee both turkish, greek speaking medical staff so that all citizens have someone of their langaue to deal with until such time that all staff are trilingual, i imagine that most turkish speakers also speak english as is the case in the south perhaps.

as it became aparent Kykos owns a lot of land in the north, if that is the case that land ought to be given to the state and all turkish speakers currently living on refugee land can be given kykos land and assistance to build home setc, that would mean that more refugee property willbecome availble for the rightful owners. the settlers in the meantime are rehoused in what is currently refugee accommodation in the south unitl their sistuation is looked at individually by a comittee comprising of turiksih speaking cypriots, greek speaking cyriots, vietnamese, australian and canadian participants.

Cyprus no longer has a military forces or national service and relies on eu for protection. amen to that.

we all share the oil wealth, i imagine that would be shared in terms of better free education, health, etc etc,

tc's ought to have a separate referendum to determine wheteher settlers stay or go and the percentage they would like to see stay. I believe that the percentage need be less than tc's.because if we left that up to the greek speaking cyp's they will say all settlers go but i do not believe that after 30 years that is such an easy call.
