Motor duty maze

Postby Den » Sun Mar 04, 2007 11:28 pm

Now that Cyprus car tax has been reduced I am more confused than before. Can anyone tell me: is it cheaper for me to import my 4 year old 2300cc car from the UK or buy a (new or secondhand) 2000cc 4x4 in Cyprus/ I am retired so I should get duty-free status. I simply find the calculations impossible to follow so I hope someone out there has managed to unravel the red tape!

if you have owned it for more than 6 months and are retiring here you wont pay duty on an import...

we shipped our pajero over in nov 2005 and as i am retired i assumed that it would be a simple excercise to register it over here! Forget it, it was a nightmare of paperwork and 6 months later was asked for more paperwork! It is 13 years old, duty paid when imported to uk so no duty should have been payable anyway!I asked how much duty would be payable and they came up with the amazing figure of cy£12500.00 on a vehicle worth at most in uk £3500. we ended up shipping it back as even if we had eventually got the duty free concession it was going to cost nearly cy£2000 to register it on cyprus plates !!!so my advice would be buy one in cyprus.

You wont save any money as a thirteen year old pajero would still cost you £6000 over here...

Anyway, the costs have dropped substantially since last year..

Make sure you have your P60, proof of residence, proof of sale of house or end of rental agreement in UK, proof of residence in cyprus, proof of income in cyprus and you should get it imported as duty paid, not duty free... ie no more to pay.

Large engine vehicles still pay the full price for registration which can be expensive..

4x4's are gradually becoming very unpopular over here as the cost of taxing them is very high..

I am running a subaru forester as its only 1990cc and is a good compromise..

:D

Are there any links to any websites which have the full information???

I ask so many people everyone tells me different things, some say old cars are refused, some say the older the car the less the tax, its so confusing.

It seems the only way to know is to send the car and wait for the invoice.

I have sent an 03 CRV 2.2 V-Tec, it arrives in Larnace on Tuesday.

I will let you all know what I was charged. Maybe we can make some sense of it then.

http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs/Custo ... enFrameSet

http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs/Custo ... nguageNo=1

BTW... google is your friend

You could also nip to your local C&E office an pick up a leaflet. The one you want is (I presume) that relating to permanent transfer of residence/relief of duty. Locations I know of that have it are the C&E offices in Lefkosia, and the C&E at Lemesos new port.
