Why do we need a flag. Flag is the symbol of natioanalism. I do not like anything that have nationalistic implications.

Get rid of all the flags.

Magikthrill,

you've left out the option that there should be a common Federal flag and then also constituent state flags - which is what the Annan Plan was suggesting.

How about if we see it as just a symbol of who we are...?

Kind of like... you are turkcyp and I am saint jimmy! To me, that's all flags are, just a differentiating symbol, sort of like different people have different names. (is that a weird point of view?)

But, anyway, magikthrill, why would it matter if the flag changes or not? What is your vote, by the way? Personally, the only thing I could think about (regarding this issue) is that we should not keep the flag of the RoC (at least as the federal flag), because of its negative historical connotations. I can't see any argument for insisting on keeping it as the flag of the united Cyprus.

granted the historical implications may be negative, but a few facts the current ROC flag is the only flag i believe in the world that actually has the country on it,which i think is very cool, and it was designed by a turkish cypriot.the flag that was chosen for the annan plan is what cyprus should not be a country of division as the colors were put on the flag.

Yeah, you might be right, I mean, it's fine by me, either way. I'm just thinking TCs wouldn't want to keep it, and I really think it's not worth another intercommunal argument. In that sense, to me it's just a symbol, not a cause of friction. If the price to pay for reunification is the change of flag, I'd settle for a white pair of underpants :D

I chose that the flag should stay the same. I agree with boulio regarding the RoC flag.

The flag chosen by the ANnan plan was horrible cause it basically state that Cypriots are nothing but pawns of their motherlands.

The RoC is very neutral and has a message of peace between the two communities. If anything, the negative historical connotations as far as the TC / GC battles are seen through the Greek flags and the pseudo states/ Turkey's flag, not the RoC's flag.

That is my opinion though.

As far as a federal flag option, I thought that option 3 sufficed.

The Cyprus flag was designed by a Turkish Cypriot artist..
The flag depicts the shape of an island that goes by the name of Cyprus, for at least 2000 years.

Let's change the flag of Cyprus, why not?
Let's change the name of Cyprus also. Call it Artichokeland Bananaland.
Let's change the people of Cyprus, the demography (that is done).
Let's change the shape of Cyprus also (Ask HIM/HER for a big earthquake with a large tsunami).

It seems to me that, nobody cares about this "land". They care only to gather personal wealth and personal "Credibility".

You have to go away from "Ithaki", in order to realize how much you love her and how much you miss her.

Neither side can blame the other side entirely, for the tragic recent history of the this land.

Let it be noted that a nucleus of fanatics in both sides, Greek and Turkish Cypriots considered the Zurich London Agreements as a provisional stage for achieving their final goals, Enosis and Partition respectively.

Did the constitution collapse with the 1963-64 events? Does the sunken ship "Deniz" in 1959 mean anything to you?
Do the names Hikmet and GurKan say anything?
Who was Dirvana and what did he do, or did not do for Cyprus and why?
Who first created segregated enclaves and expelled their fellow citizens by force and atrocities? Atrocities brought more atrocities back and the fanatics, of both sides, won. How many thousands of Greeks were expelled from Turkey, because of the events in Cyprus?

Why was Makarios equally hated by the Greek, Turkish and American governments and how many attempts against hi life were made? What percentage of the GCs did not vote for Makarios and what did they want instead? What did Dervish Kavazoglou die for? Who killed him?
What did the Protocol, signed by Toumbas and Chaglayangil in 1966 in Paris, was all about?

When are we going to realize that Enosis and partition are not going to happen? When are we going to realize that if we don't come together and make something good out of this island, we would all lose it for ever?

TP: Does it legitimize the TRNC?

AD: It cannot legitimize the TRNC. No one can legitimize the TRNC. Unfortunately, the weakness of the Greek side is that they believe that the TRNC can be recognized, but it is not possible. Even Turkey will not allow it to be legitimized. Turkey cannot accept the existence of a separate Turkish state, very close to her shores. It is very much against her psychology.

TP: And, therefore, Turkey’s reaction to what you have said would be that the north would have to subsist as part of Turkey or, at least, subordinate to it, would that be correct?

AD: Yes. The annexation of the north to Turkey, they think will not be very much in favour of the interests of Turkey, because still they consider themselves as a guarantor power over the whole of Cyprus.

Some interesting questions and answers, by various people, here....

The Cyprus flag represents the last thing that unites us.
If you burn the flag... you would burn what symbolizes the last remnants of dignity on this beautiful island.
I voted NO.

I actually like the current flag and having heard many arguements for and against, and while everyone has plausable reasons, i think it still symbolises us as one people.

If there is a settlment that created a Annan plan type situation or just a "simple" one state unification i would like to see the following symbols/flags banned from fix display :

> all Greek flags
> all Turkish flags
> all "TRNC" flags
> any other "non-Cypriot" flag

The only flags/banners/icons that should be used in public events/buildings/sports teams should be the current "RoC" flag.
