In the musical South Pacific, Lt. Joe Cable falls in love with a Polynesian girl and sings this song:
You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!
With some modifications to the middle verse:
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people who live over the Green Line,
And people whose faith is diff'rently said,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You could transpose this song from a S, Pacific island to an E. Med. one. (Notice that it applies equally to both sides!)
This is half the problem. Most of it lies in propaganda and one side trying to score Brownie points off the other, rather than even attempting to find a common ground. And today's generation is carefully taught to hate the ogres living on the other side.
