PASSIVE SMOKING AT WORK IS NOT FAIR!

Postby bambam » Mon Feb 26, 2007 4:49 pm

Im working for a comapny which allows smoking. Being a non smoker this is really starting to bother me. Surely this isnt right. It is a tabacco company though, but does that still mean smoking is ok ?
Cigars are the main culprit. Do I have a right to complain?

Health and Safety at Law is in force here (since 1989) and does state that the environment should be comfortable for both smokers and non-smokers. They must take measures so you are no affected ie: not smoking at the desks, designated smoking area.

If you are suffering inform your superior that the Law is in force and they should attend to your needs.

Suing them may make them take notice but I expect it will be too late for you then.
I expect you get the usual Cyprus response if you don't like it dont stay!!
Roll on the time when it becomes European law and smoking is banned in all public places not just given lip service as it is now.
I was in a restaurant yesterday with my family in the no smoking section ( as were the majority of the customers). All was well until the staff break when they ate at a small table in the no smoking section and then proceded to light up. Give them their due they actually stopped when it was pointed out to them but if looks could kill.
Decided not wise to ask for the desert menu!"!!!!

Questioned management about it and was told they had been allowed inside to smoke as it was cold out! Poor loves!!

Why not in the smoking section near the bar then?
"Because it was not good for the staff to be seen smoking in front of the customers."

DUH!! What were we then.

Blame my dyslexic fingers for the typing error, they were in a rush to finish their editorial tasks.

Thanks for all of your comments. I have told them about the smoking and the reaction I had was what I expected really. "Its a tobacco company so tough" Better start looking elsewhere!

The Health and Safety at work law is in place. Each company must abide by it. The directors can be fined up to 10,000 or get 2 years in prison. Inform your local health inspector then get another job...

Going a bit off track I know

I've just been reading an article in todays Cyprus Mail about a police clampdown on smoking in public places (bars , restaurants etc)

I didn't know that officially smoking was banned in public places in Cyprus
