Stuff made from grapes stuffed with nuts!!!

Postby jody » Mon Feb 26, 2007 3:20 pm

Just wondering silly question but someone may know, cannot remember the name of the stuff but its made from grapes hung and its stuffed with either almonds or walnuts.I love the stuff but is it fattening!!!!

Don't want to go and eat loads of the yummy stuff and then find out its mega high in calories,i know its all natural from grape juice.

Anyway if anyone out there has a clue i'd be grateful.

Thanx jody xx

Its souzoukko Jody

We made ours last november with the last of the grapes

Shouldnt put many inches on the waistline as the ony sugars in it are the natural sugars from the grape and the nuts are an excellent source of of amino acids

Easy but time consuming

The nuts are threaded on a string (wife and sis in laws job)

The juice is extracted fron grapes and filtered (my job that cos we're automated now)

The grape juice is put on to boil and reduces into a syrup (long job that ..at least 6 keos worth)

When juice is turning to a syrup the string of nuts are coated (they must be left to set before dipping again...More keo)

They are then repeatedly dipped until coating is required thickness

When set the string can be pulled out

Hey Presto Souzoukko (and Pis*ed)

Unfortunately the only soutzoukko I have seen being sold at the shops in
Larnaca are the ones with sucrose added, which give it an unnatural sweet
taste. Does anyone know where I can find some proper soutzoukko with none of that crap added?

Try the 'Farmers' open air markets I'm sure they must have them in Larnaca.

I know they do in Nicosia

Or the local village festivals (panayiri)

Unfortunately most supermarkets only sell the mass produced stuff with additives

Andri no flour is used in making souzoukko 'village style' thats just another additive now used by people trying to make a little go a long way.

Just pure grape syrup is all we use and its dried by hanging it close to an open wood fire in the kitchen of the house.

The souzoukko is therefore dried and 'cured' naturally :)
