Free I like you, when are you running for president? My friend you are very right the problem is the fact that we do not identify as cypiot because if we did then there would be no problem.
However, in light of the online media's recent reports, I am becoming of the view that Turkey has so much power over those cypriots who speak turkish and currently living in the north that it is impossible to reach a peaceful solution because turkey is driving the ship.
However, it is not all doom, though the hard decision is for those cypriots who currently live in the north, if they decide they want unification in a united cyprus wher all cypriots live together in peace then it can happen, however those cypriots speaking turkish and / or living in the north hold the key to a peaceful solution. If they voted with their feet and sought refuge in the south and I believe this will happen as they realise that they can be safe in the south and can share the economic develpoment and health infrastructures available there will be a immigration to the south. However aside from this last point if they seek refuge to the south and the number of cypriots identifying as turkish speaking, in the south exceeds the numbers of those living in the north, then turkey will have no leg to stand on or at least turkey will not have an argument of the so called protection of turkish speaking cypriots. this will lead the international community to question turkey's occupation of cyprus. Now with more turkish speaking cypriots n the south sharing the resources and socio-economic/ cultural doain of life and with turkey's aspiration to join the EU , the only action that turkey could take is the withdrwal of its army and thus allowing a unified cyprus.
