Container to Cyprus from UK

Postby russwood » Sat Feb 24, 2007 2:28 pm

Hi everyone, We have purchased an apartment in Paphos, handover is mid May 2007. I decided to purchase our furniture in the UK and need to ship out prior to the handover in a 20 foot container. We have been advised to ship from door (UK) to door (Paphos) as this seems to be the least amount of hassle. I have been quoted for a 20 foot container prices ranging from £2000-3000 BPounds. I would appreciate if anyone out there could give me advice in this area. :?

I suppose it might depend on where you live in the UK. I was pulling some information together end of last year to try and work out relocation costs and for a 20 foot container got quotes of (this is UK sterling pounds) £1250 plus £350 to help load the container, and £400 to £500 for clearing in Cyprus and delivery to house. I was not able to give them specific details but it seems to me you should be able to do it for a sum towards the bottom end of that £2000 to £3000 range.

Hi,

the price you mention is too expensive. For a 20' container its about £1200- £1400 door to door depending on where you live in the UK.

Try Mondial shipping or andrews shipping. Don't have the numbers to hand but will dig them out for you if you want.

A relative came here last year and got a 20' container for less than £1000 (Freight Movers International - Craig Lingard
01708 630448)
He got friends & family to help load it

Used an agent in Limassol port to get the container out of the port and up to his house.
Got a bit stung by the agent who charged him for extra help to unload the container which didn't turn up.

Total cost to get the container from the port and unloaded at his house CY£700. (including port fees and £200 for the no-shows but you either pay up or don't get your stuff)

How much furniture can you get in a 20 foot container. We move next year and I am having trouble visualising how big the containers are. We won't have very much, mainly personal posessions so am trying to work out how big the container will need to be.

You can get a small home into a 20' container especially if you don't need to bring wardrobes.
consider how big your new home is and how much furniture you are likely to need.
Remember to fill every available cavity(freezer, washing machine etc.) with your gear

the relative i mentioned earlier moved into a two bedroom village house and only neede half of a 20' container. Of course my missus helped fill the rest.

we moved a three bedroom bungalow in two goes and used two 20' containers. my wife likes furniture and we managed to fill a 4 bedroom house with a separate apartment with it and she's still buying :)

If you buy new furniture and appliances in UK and have them shipped over, do you have to pay import duties ?.

The 'agent' to which I referred in an earlier reply dealt with all that in his price, a list of goods had to be produced to the customs officer and because all our home was valued at around £300 i guess we didn't have to pay much.

Thanks for the responses, if you could find that number I would be much obliged Pantheman. We are moving from Durham in the North East of England, so I suppose its not a difficult pick up for the container loaders. The apartment is a 3 bedroom one & I am sure a 20 foot container will more than suffice, I would try for a smaller space but have been advised that it is not as secure? This forum is a great aide, I hope I will be able to give advice myself in the future. Thanks all.
