Another question is that why didn't Makarios and Kyprianou ask strong assurances concerning the demographics of Cyprus and properties belong to GCs, during the negotiations process from 1975 until 1979?

I know this is off topic but I have a question since Makarios was mentioned. WHy the heck was an Archbishop chosen to rule a country?

Just a minor point: any Pontian Greeks with Greek passports are EU citizens and therefore their presence in Cyprus cannot be restricted in any way.

Hey, Insan, you are right ... I looked through the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979, and also the early Security Council resolutions, and there is no mention of settlers ...

That's odd ... :?

Alexandre,

I think the time immediately after the invasion, the priorities of Cyprus were the rebuilding and stablisation of the country. We were in an extremely week position and I think the priorities of the time were in different areas.

Also, the north was effectively a closed area and very little information was coming through regarding the extent of the number of people from Turkey that were were brought in. Remeber that the UN was so restricted in its operations in the north (against all UN resolutions if I may add) it was impossible to know what was going on. Its only when this information was begining to filter out years later that the extent of the problem was known.
