Name and Shame

Postby Strahd » Fri Feb 23, 2007 1:13 pm

I want to bring in your attention that Mr Bob Scaife a radio amateur operator from Leeds with callsign G7PAF has been operating from inside the occuppied areas of the Republic of Cyprus with callsigns 1B/G7PAF and 1B/N9YGF. You can visit his webpages at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bob.g7paf/1bg7paf.htm . Our fellow ham seems not able to understand that by transmitting with this callsign he is using his Radio Amateur License illegally. The Cyprus Amateur Radio Society has officially reported this incident to the FCC and OfCom and both authorities are prosecuting this person for misuse of his radio communications license.

Operating inside the occupied areas? Sounds like an old - and very bad spy movie - what will they do to him? Whip him soundly with his antennae?

You seem to not understand how serious this is. Having used illegally an amateur radio license issued by OfCom is a very serious issue. This person will have all his equipment confescated and probably face sentence of at least 3 years... petty issue...

Strahd is correct, I know from my occupation how important it is that everybody sticks to their allocated radio broadcast band.

So this is serious, but I wonder how posting it on this forum will help?
And should it really be in the "Cyprus problem" section?

so let me get this, is he violating his broadcasting rules because he is using illegal frequencies or because he is bradcasting from "illegal lands", because there are many english radio broadcasters in the TRNC so are they all breaking the rules too??

No shahmaran his violating amateur radio operating laws because he transmitted using illegal callsign for his station. If he was to use the proper callsign 5B/ then he would have been legal. As always the TRNC authorities have mislead this person by forcing him to operate with a non recognised callsign by the ITU thus illegal.

As for TRNC broadcasters yes they are all illegal because the only authority able to give them a broadcasting license is the Republic of Cyprus. Same goes for GSM phones...
