Personal attacks and behavior in general

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Personal attacks and behavior in general

Postby Admin » Fri Feb 23, 2007 10:38 am

Hello,

In this forum we are trying to allow the maximum of free speech possible. It is a forum for adults that should be able to moderate themselves.

I am not and I do not pretend to be a judge and this is why I prefer to intervene the least possible. However repeated gross violations of our rules can not be allowed.

I will not go back to read every one of the posts made in the last few days. However the ones that have violated the rules, and they know who they are, are now publicly warned that if they continue in that they will be banned either temporarily or permanently without a further warning.

This is a section to discuss the Cyprus problem and not your personal issues. If you are tired of discussing the Cyprus problem then I suggest to take a brake from this section of our forum.

Thank you.

8) I have to say guys and gals that some subjects approached on this forum are very sensitive areas to both sides of the argument and as such things will naturally get heated.........
But the language used and the personal insults traded are like no other forum i have ever been on and you are lucky to have got away with it thus far.
Can i make a request that the language is toned down a bit? please remember that women read this forum and would you use such language in front of a lady? would you like YOUR wife/girlfriend to be subjected to such language? no i thought not, then kindly remember that in future when posting please.
thank you.

I agree with Admin on this one. This forum has been getting out of hand a little bit...

I can see that the flaming has re-started :(

What is worse is that a number of recent new threads are deliberately provocative, written with a clear view of inviting inflammatory replies (and, of course, there are some idiots who fall into the trap). And so it goes on... :(

As it is clear that some members here are incapable of holding a civilised discussion and that admin/moderators are incapable or unwilling to suspend/ban members, I have another suggestion: let's suspend this board altogether for 4 weeks (by locking it) with the warning that it will not be permitted to discuss these matters elsewhere on the forum, either.

you mean the foul mouthing with obseinities and attacking members?

http://www.cyprus-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=138818#138818

I totally agree, the admin must take action and not just words. its just some members can't control themselves when it comes to foul language.

as rawk said, above, this is a family forum and all swearing should be banned. don't tell me you wanna close the forum because of the actions of one? that wouldn't be fair now would it?

As for the new threads, the rules do not specify or do not contrict you from opening as long as they are not insulting or attacking members. And i fail to see any because no names have been added to any of these threads. unless you condone propagandists for roaming free in the forum.

but the url quote is against the grain of rule number 1 which is.
rule 1
Personal attacks are not allowed - Don't attack others. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully without insult and personal attack.

If you feel they are provoctive you have the choice of not participating. simple as that.

ps. i think you should reconsider your description of calling members idiots as this in itself contravines rule one. remember personal insults are not on and you just crossed the line i am afraid.

an apology or withdrawal of your comment will be highly appreciated devil.

pitsilos i'm not going to bother to trawl through the forum to find any examples, but I would not be surprised if - were i the sort of individual to attack you, which I am not - i would end up saying you were also guilty of this sort of bad behaviour which at times borders on the idiotic and pointless.

Devil was not proposing to temporarily suspend the whole forum, just the cyprus problem section and to rule that no-one should use any other section to publicise any cyprus problem type issues (and presumably, that any attempt to do so should lead to immediate deletion of the post and/or a ban).

As for swearing, I do not think it should necessarily be banned because a) it is so difficult to police and b) any minors viewing this site could easily be exposed to this sort of language elsewhere on the internet. And it is easily circumnavigated, for example if I want to I can call you a tw&t and we all know what I have said but i did not use a swear word.

However, that said, when members are swearing simply to use bad language or attack another member then I obviously don't think that is acceptable. And what it normally means is that said member has lost the argument and has resorted to the lowest common denominator - a personal attack.

I have to say, people on this forum get away with an awful lot which would not be tolerated on other forums. This may be because the Admin is trying to encourage free discussion and treat us all like adults. But a number of members totally abuse this privilege.

The problem is that the Admin and moderators are only humans and presumably are not paid directly for their work on this forum, so are not able to police it to the extent they might like. Also, when a forum starts getting heavy handed it can get too bureaucratic at times. Devil you probably appreciate that from the fact you administrate another forum yourself?

Anyway mr. pitsilos, what a shame that it would appear you decided to use this thread to attack other forum members - i.e viewpoint - it certainly would appear to readers that this was a thinly veiled attempt to promote your own, some would say, corrupt agenda.
