Morse Code Dropped as a requirement for amateu radio license

Postby Strahd » Wed Feb 21, 2007 4:50 pm

The Ministry of Communications and Works have now dropped the Morse Code exam requirement for amateur radio licensing in Cyprus. It is now so much easier to get a license and become an amateur radio operator joining the best scientific hobby in the world and offer to your community!

I had a ham licence in Cyprus in 1952 (ZC4BN)! My Morse speed was 25 wpm (plain language) 20 wpm (cypher) at the time. Now, it's zero! My first licence, in Scotland, dated I think, from 1949 (GM3GUC).

It was only a matter of time before it was completely dropped. CW had it's uses but times move on.

As it was something I was very interested in during my teens I would love to get back into it now I've retired and will soon come to Cyprus for good.

I would appreciate any help anyone in Cyprus can give me -- I shall be relocating to the Larnaca area.

Visit http://www.cyhams.org there you will get a lot of information and some contact details to get in touch with the Cyprus Amateur Radio Society. They are very helpful people.

CW still is put is good use by amateurs and will be for years to come, just check how many CW contests with 1000s of participants throughout the world still take place. It is so simple to build a CW transceiver and it can be used in the worst conditions possible! In addition it is very useful in emergency situations were power is a problem.

However I do agree with you that it was about time it was dropped as a requirement for getting a full license.

Don't forget Morse code is the only digital communications mode that does not require a computer 8) faster than an SMS ( http://slashdot.org/articles/05/05/06/2145200.shtml ) and very cool to know!

Thanks for the info -- I'd already found the web site some while ago and if they are as friendly as you say I'll give it a try.

Many thanks Bill
