Visiting North cyprus from the South..any info?

Postby Grob » Fri Jan 07, 2005 3:46 pm

Hi

Can someone please help. We want to do a two-centre holiday around Feb-March starting off in South Cyprus and then spending a few days in the North. What are the resrictions now? We hold british passports. We'd read that the 10 (or 12 hour..same day anyway) restriction had been lifted now. Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

Hi,

well, I'm holding a german passport but I don't think that makes much difference. You can go now for up to three months as far as I know. You can cross the border from south to north at any time of the day, even night. In case you take a car with you (rented or registered in RoC) you need to make an insurance at the border. For 1 day, 3 days or 1 year. 3 days was CYP 15,- in summer 2004, 1 year was CYP 65,- if I'm not mistaken. Depending on day, time, and where you cross the border take into consideration some waiting time. Especially when going back to south in Nicosia.

cheers, and enjoy your trip!

Grob,

No problems crossing from South to North, just need to go through the checkpoint and bob's your uncle - very different to the pre-April 2003 experience.

One word of caution though. I've heard a number of instances where the insurance taken out by people at the border crossing has essentially not been worth the paper it's written on. Should you have an accident in the north, it could potentially be very difficult to claim on this insurance. Therefore, I would check with your hire car company if you are allowed to take the car across. If not, you can either hire a car on the other side or take a taxi (which are plentiful, cheap and have drivers who can at least get by in English).

Enjoy the north, particularly recommend going to Kyrenia (Girne), which is stunning and also taking a jaunt along the Karpass peninsula, it's quite a drive but well worth it.
