Misleading Adverts for holidays in north Cyprus

Postby Jerry » Mon Feb 19, 2007 11:05 pm

Some of you may be aware that some holiday companys in the UK are advertising quicker direct journeys to the north via Larnaca. Some of the adverts I have seen are misleading since they quote quicker flight times but fail to mention transfer times. I have complained to the Advertising Standards Authority about one such advert since it implies that it has cut the travel time down to the north by nearly two hours. Complaints can be made online. I am fairly confident that my complaint will be upheld, I have done this successfully before.

If they say that it is Larnaca then why is it misleading? Except if they imply that Larnaca is in the north :? All these noise about direct flights to the north is crap anyways. Larnaca is closer to Kerynia than many parts of the south. Should every village in Cyprus have an airport so people will not have to drive for 30 minutes?

No Sotos, the advert I was shown implied that instead of a 6 hour flight you could be in the north in just over 4 hours. The company use Larnaca and several UK airports, some of which must involve a 5 hour flight. The advert failed to mention the time it takes to get out of the airport and onward transfer to the north. The advert is, in my opinion, designed to mislead.

Misleading or not my friend the target is to offer legal direct flights to Cyprus. As long as this target is served then who cares?

Pyrpolizer, in the UK adverts that deliberatly mislead the public are not allowed. if you care to look at the ASA website you will see thousands of adjudications where complaints have been upheld.
Since direct flights are not yet permitted I would guess that impling they are is a good way of boosting business at this important time for the holiday industry.

Sorry jerry but who told you direct flights to Larnaca are not permitted? It is flights (ALL FLIGHTS) to Ercan that are not permitted.

If I got your objection right, then this actually refers to what the ad says for direct flights to "North Cyprus"?
If yes you absolutely right, the direct flight must explicitly state to "Cyprus" or to "Larnaca Airport-Cyprus".
A similar case would be "I offer direct flights to the Pyramids via Cairo". An unsuspected reader would think the Pyramids are outside the Airport, whereas the reality is you need 2-4 hours to get there.

Yes I know you can fly direct to Larnaca, I've done it many times, I'm talking about direct to the north. The ad is misleading as I said, it may be posted on the ASA website soon.

OK jerry here is a question 4 u:

Why do u hate the Turkish Cypriots so very much?

They get shafted if they fly into Ercan, “illegal point of entry” bollocks, and when they offer flight through Laranca u go running to tell tales!!
