German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave an interview to the Greek Kathimeniri Newspaper and emphasized the importance of Turkey's membership in the EU. Stating that good relations with Turkey will bring many benefits to the EU, Merkel also mentioned the Cyprus problem and said they will make a series of decisions to remove the isolations (embargoes) on the Northern part of the Island. Merkel said: "On December 2006, foreign ministers of EU member countries came to a consensus on the removal of embargoes and isolations on Northern Cyprus. As the new term president of the EU, Germany will continue its contacts in order to realize this consensus.

They are unbelievable they want to go back to a time when we were not even attempting to fordge a partnership. 1960 was when we had the only opportunity to create a united Cyprus but they admantly refuse this starting point as it does not serve their purpose when trying to lay the blame on anyone and everyone but themselves.

yes and now, WE are the bad guys and WE are the thieves, we mustn't be allowed to fly directly to our country, people shouldn't be making TV programs about moving to the TRNC, people shouldn't be putting any money into the TRNC just in case we develop, people should only refer to the TRNC with quotations! it all suits them very well when it comes to treating the other half of the island like dirt while ignoring the portion of history that doesnt suit them, but boasting around words like human rights and freedom and equality and compatriotism, at the same time?! come on man!...and then the guy turns around and says "its a lost argument and we should be facing the truth", what truth? the Greek truth or the historical truth?

makes me utterly sick i tell you...

SHah you can fly directly to your country. Larnaca is a very reliable airport. Fact is that the TRNC will stay in inverted coma's because it is an illegal state. Thhe fa t that there is property that belongs to other people over there also creates the issue that investment in the north might lead the buyer into acquiring property that was not the sellers property to sell in the first place..(a basic principle in property law.)

I'd be happy to discuss any period you see fit and find the faults of the one and the faults of the other but what would be the point? I know i'm right and you know you're right.

I propose unification, you prefer partition. You are getting what you want now but because it is done...(this is the most important part here) without my consent as well you will be faced with the difficulties you describe above. ANd I will keep talking about my human rights being violated and about the lack of freedom i enjoy in my own state. I am denied these rights just as you are denied other rights.

It'll go on and on, until we both agree or until a time it won't matter anymore.

Larnaca i cant fly to, first of all its not my country, secondly I'm forced to pick up a RoC passport in order to do so, which I'm seriously refusing to do!

Yes your property is still there but who is to say they are selling YOUR property, thousands of new properties are being built everyday, you don't own ALL of the island but as retaliation, you are more than happy to block ANY kind of investment to be done for the TRNC what so ever, so i think you are simply asking for a LOT more than you (we) deserve, simply because, you can!

You are not thinking "oh but there are other Cypriots living there who need to get on with their lives" you are simply choosing to create a barrier in front of everyone who lives there (ie. what Jerry is trying to achieve), whether they are TCs, settlers, immigrants or tourists, simply because they choose TRNC over the RoC, THIS my friend goes WAY beyond what you are claiming to be "your right", which hardly goes beyond the loss of some properties, so its not a surprise that people like me (and many others) still refuse to pick up your passport. Therefore lets not even begin to compare our "denial of rights" because it would be a very unfair comparison!

I'm from Lefke and so is my mum, and my dad is from Karpaz (and both of their parents and their parents), we have never moved, nor took over any other properties and ALL of our land and businesses are in the TRNC. But i feel that the RoC is deliberately trying to remove and invalidate ALL of my options for me to work, live and pursue a normal/free life, and that is in order to leave me with no choice but the RoC...not a chance my friend!! so excuse my bitter attitude towards the bastards but I'm not going anywhere and definitely not flying into Larnaca...

However none of this means I'm a partitionist, it means I'm born into this state of conflict and I'm trying to survive as best as i can without deserting my country and my ethnicity, because for me the RoC is liturally another country, so if we all can and will live together as equals of Cyprus, then fine, but I'm not going to settle for anything less not even slightly, instead i rather continue as i am!!

Then help me with the 2 states 1 country solution Shah. This way you get to stay in your state (country as you call it) and others in theirs, but all of us belonging to the island of Cyprus. I guarantee you, you will feel at home, being part of Cyprus and not a stranger, in no time at all.

STRAW SAYS THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WILL CONTINUE ITS EFFORTS TO END THE ISOLATION OF THE TURKISH CYPRIOT PEOPLE

The Leader of the British House of Commons Jack Straw has said that the British government will continue its efforts towards helping to end the international isolation on the Turkish Cypriot people.

He said that the biggest disappointment he experienced during his term as Foreign Secretary was the rejection of the Annan Plan by the Greek Cypriot Side.

In a speech to the British Parliament, Mr. Straw said his country shares the disappointment of the Turkish Cypriot People over the failure to lift its international isolations in spite of its approval of a UN peace plan during the 2004 referenda.

Mr. Straw said that the biggest disappointment he experienced during his term as Foreign Secretary was the rejection of the Annan Plan by the Greek Cypriot Side in spite of the approval of the Plan by the Turkish Cypriot People.

Reminding that the European Union had taken decisions to end the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people soon after the referenda in Cyprus, he said it wasn’t possible to lift the isolation on North Cyprus but stated that the British Government will continue its efforts towards achieving this goal.

Paaul12 There is no need to descend to personal abuse, you simply demean yourself and weaken your arguments. Why don't you write in English or are you too idle to press the extra keys.

VP, 1960 was probably the worst time to start a partnership. EOKA and TMT had been killing Cypriots, the TC police had been torturing Greek Cypriots, the British had deliberately divided the two communities and Turkey had just thrown tens of thousands of Greeks out of Istanbul. With little or no goodwill emanating from either side the ROC was doomed from the start and Turkey knew that one day Greek fascists would provoke an intervention.
I don't want partition but I see it as inevitable.
Turkey will sell you down the river, she will settle for 20% of the island in order to gain admission to the EU and legally keep troops there, you will become a Turkish province and in a few generations Turkish Cypriots will have all but disappeared from Cyprus.

how will that make TCs "disappear" ?

how is that different from the multicultural EU country, the RoC? if we are all in the EU then it wont really matter will it?

Kikapu I'm more than happy to have a 2 state solution, i personally think its a lot more feasible and realistic, but of course it all depends how its carried out...

I hope you mean 2 states 1 country solution Shah.

That is the reason why we have elected leaders, to do what's best for us, but as citizens, we can also talk to others, to offer alternative options, other than partition, annexation, and more future conflicts. I want everyone to feel at home and secure and give the best they possibly can, for their families in the "United States of Cyprus".

shah you seem to be an innocent bystander in this conflict my friend with only the patriotic and the "let me get on with my life" feelings to deal with. I being a refugee with lost property...(father from karpaz and mother from morphou with my house in morphou) have more in my mind.
