Sleeping Problems!!!!

Postby LENA » Mon Feb 19, 2007 3:50 am

Every now and then I have problems with my sleep...I dont usually sleep much but during those period I hardly manage to sleep 2 hours during the whole day...so as a friend was telling me I manage to sleep equal hours with him but I had to spent a week he had to spent just a day!!!

When I checked my emails today I saw this video!!!

Insomnia is characterized by an inability to sleep and/or inability to remain asleep for a reasonable period. Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and nonorganic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder. It is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. An overactive mind or physical pain may also be causes. Finding the underlying cause of insomnia is usually necessary to cure it.

I tried several things...but its usually from stress and anxiety...I hate pills and especially sleeping pills...so I just have to wait until I sort my problems out and try to relax!!!

Anyway...for those who suffer from sleeping problems...I found out (to be honest a friend advice me) that milk helps a LOT. I tried several herbs, essential oils, gym, get my self tired...not much help...so try to relax and drink milk!!!!

Lena I am suffering from the same thing!

I can never sleep and it got so bad I started having really bad anxiety and panic attacks before eventually falling asleep. I had no choice but to ask the doctor for sleeping tablets because everything else I tried (nightol etc etc) just didnt do anything. Wasnt the best idea because since theyve run out Ive been feeling worse then I was before and my doctors refusing to give me any more.

Its terrible, I know what youre going through, thanks for the links Im going to check them out now.

I am really bad at sleeping. I've gone through periods of 3 weeks where I've had no more than 2-3 hours each night. Last night it was 3 hours.

I get to sleep and then wake up after a couple of hours and that's it! Up for the rest of the night. Having said that I do sort out problems or remember important things as my mind is spinning. I write things down.

The only 'natural' remedy that has worked for me are Boots Sleepeze but as these are pure antihistamine you can't take them for longer than a week and they do become less effective after a while.

My advice is to stay away from sleeping pills as far as possible.
Some age old remedies include hot baths with epsom salts before sleep, hot milk as Lena says, and lavender essential oil on the pillow while sleeping. Also if you wake up in the middle of the night (I wake up about 3.30 to 4 every night) don't stay in bed and toss and turn.Get up and sit in a comfortable chair and do some reading(preferably nothing too stimulating, the telephone directory is fine :) )till you feel sleepy again.

Oh,and stay away from alcohol too.Despite accepted wisdom,it is not a help in sleeping.Another remedy is to walk for at least 1 hour every day, preferably in the morning.Good night and good luck! :)

Some of your tricks my dear Birkibrisli...can help if the problem is not too serious...but some times not that much...!!!

I use anyway some of those in day base...but some others I use them just in difficult situations...

I couldn't agree with you more on the sleeping pills issue. Those tablets help you just for a while...but make the whole situation even worst. A family friend was addicted to those pills and even when he slept he always felt tired.
And through my experience...to force your self to sleep...doesn't help...make things even worst!!
So I agree also with that one too!!!

I have been taking sleeping pills for about 5 years not every night but 3 or 4 times a week. It was caused by a long running civil court case, that eventually went to appeal, then repeated in essence in the high court. Unfortunately stress does not go away instantly and it has taken a year to get back into sleeping without any pills.

There is nothing worse than getting about an hours sleep a night over a long period. You hate going to bed because you know you won't sleep. Its not about being tired. I was always so tired but could never sleep. Glad to say its about a month since I took one.

Try good quality lavender oil (just a few drops) scattered on your pillow just before you go to sleep.

Sleeping pills aren't much good after a certain amount of time, yr. body builds up a resistance and then they are not effective, can even lead to depression and are addictive.

Other remedies; soft jazz music playing, switch on the washing machine, the repetitive sound is v. relaxing.

Hope this helps.

Geranium oil also works for relaxation and creating pleasure to distract the brain away from stressful thoughts.
