TRNC Pigeon epidemic and Declining TC numbers!..

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

GCs prefered the young pigeons in the past the so called "palazouthkia". My grandma was making us soups with pigeons everytime we happened to catch cold. She thought it was the most effective medicine.

That's right Pyro...We called the young pigeons "Palaz"!In my time there were no mass sale or production of pigeons.People just raised them at home and ate them when they wanted.Like we did chickens in the village.
I still remember my grandma chasing and catching chooks and just wringing their necks on the spot.It was enough to give us nightmares...

Palaz is from Turkish I believe.I hope the viewpoints are reading this.

Or is it (was it) just a peculiarity of TCs??? :)

Bir, I use to shoot not only pigeons but sparrows with my Catapult, but not in Cyprus only.....but in London.

I think Sparrows were more of a delicacy than Pigeons, in the good old days.

I even hit a Sparrow with a "free throw" by hand.

Damn, I should have become a Pitcher for the Yankees Baseball Team.

I am pretty shocked now thinking back what we did to animals.Goes to show you are a product of your times and social conditions...
The most cruel practise I think was catching these little birds we called "Pulya" (probably from Greek?)by planting sticks covered in strong glue in trees. The birds got stuck and couldnt get away.I never saw how they killed them, but my father used to buy them from other villagers in jars fill of vinegar as Pyro described earlier. They were absolutlely delicious to eat though...

Why are you scared of pigeons,Snake?
They are one of the most harmless birds in the world.
And they can't hurt you when they are cooked and on the table, can they? :)

Maybe its just London pigeons...

But they actually DO look like flying rats with their grey feathers and red eyes. Actually the freakiest ones are the plain white ones.

Its the flapping noise i hate...that shit scares me.

They shit everywhere.

They eat shit off the streets.

I hate the "roo roo" noise they make.

I hate their boney dirty looking feet.

I got a phobia of most things that are feathers and bone but maybe because pigeons are so dirty and such pests that the idea of eating them revolts me.

Also when I was very young on holiday in Cyprus, I saw two dead pigeons on the side of the kitchen at my aunties in her village. I asked what they were doing there - when I was told that was my meal I wanted to cry and was longing for a McDonalds like crazy (yes i know McD's is pure SHIT but when your young its a treat!)...I think that evening I just ate koulouri bread with tzantziki...nice and plain lol.

Maybe that experience also added to my phobia.

Actually my phobia of birds came from when my sick and sadistic auntie came round one Christmas (just before) with a big black dustbin bag. I asked what was in it and she said my Christmas present. I threw my hand into the bag and clenched to grab what I thought was something nice and boxed with shiney wrapping paper. But when i did clench, I felt something soft and boney and feathery - infact i think i crushed a bone. It turned out to be two dead Turkeys. I know she's my auntie but she is a sick bitch.

I'll eat Chicken but the moment I see a head or a claw i wanna be sick. I hate looking at half eaten roast chicken cos it just looks like a carcus to me.

Perhaps we should pay the settlers to start eating pigeon too. Most of the problems you mention would disappear.
When one of my daughters were about 4 or 5,we were eating chicken one day when her curiocity got better of her,"Where does chicken meat come from, daddy?" she asked.I almost choked on my drumstick, and thought better of lying."It comes from chickens, the animals you know..." I managed to stutter, thinking was about to create a new vegetarian."Poor chicken," she said with a very sad voice, then "can I have some more daddy???" Pewwww...that was a relief.I believe children need animal protein for the growth of their brain...
