Teachers' Salaries

Postby Half Soldier » Fri Feb 16, 2007 9:38 pm

Hello, first post - new here.

Just wondering if anyone could advise me about what secondary school teachers' salaries are like in Cyprus. I'm in the very early stages of thinking about moving and just trying to get some idea of whether or not it would be viable.

Thanks

Are you talking about public of private schools? For Greek public schools I believe salaries start from around 700 pounds and they go up from there. The problem is that for most specializations there are long waiting lists. You might have to wait many years until your turn comes. I know people that were waiting for more than a decade.

I would be looking at a private school. Because of what I teach (Religious Education) I would need to be in a school that followed the English curriculum. Am I right in assuming that there are long waiting lists because teaching is relatively well paid in Cyprus?

The pay is good at public schools. I don't know about private ones. But here the religion is different so even in English language schools I don't think you should expect that it will be taught in the same way like in the UK.

Thank you for this information. Religious Education in UK now looks at 6 different religions, but I must admit I don't know anything at all about how it is taught in Cyprus. I would obviously need to check this out with a school. My husband and I will be in Cyprus over Easter, so this should be a good opportunity.

The religion of most attendees at the English speaking schools is Christian but a mixture, primarily of C&E, Russian Orthadox and Catholisism.

MY SON ATTENDS AN ENGLISH SCHOOL IN CYPRUS AND THEY DO HAVE R.E LESSONS EACH WEEK COVERING AS YOU SAY A BROAD SPECTRUM OF DIFFERENT RELIGIONS. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW ARMY BASES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF CYPRUS AND EACH ONE O THESE HAS A SECONDRY SCHOOL ON IT. THEY ARE ALWAYS ADVERTISING FOR TEACHERS, SUPPLY TEACHERS AND TEACHING ASSISTANTS. YOU COULD TRY THE MOD WEBSITE AND FOLLOW THE LINKS TO CYPRUS THEY WOULD THEN GIVE YOU THE NAMES OF EACH OF THE SCHOOLS ON EACH OF TE BASES AND THEN YOU COULD ENQUIRE AT THE INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS? THEY MAY NOT BE AS WELL PAID AS THE PRIVATE SCHOOLS BUT IT WOULD BE A FOOT IN THE DOOR AND A PERMANANT JOB?
GOOD LUCK

Thanks again for your suggestions and comments. In fact I rang a private school in Larnaca yesterday that has teaching posts available. I was told that the salary is likely to be in the region of CY£700 per month. I agree that the army schools would probably be the best bet, and I do regularly check the Service Children's Education website where these vacancies are advertised. The majority of vacancies seem to come up for schools on the bases in Germany. Cyprus ones seem to be much rarer, and I don't feel ready to take the risk with supply teaching. If we were to move, it would need to be a permanent position. Am I right in thinking that there are two secondary schools, King Richard's and St John's on the bases at Dhekelia and Episkopi respectively?
