You are paying for the overheads in making the place look nice and the service. I would rather pay a little more and sit in attractive surroundings than get a cheap coffee in a run down 'greasy spoon' (another English language anomaly).

Funny, my wife hasn't yet realized that she wants a divorce. The more diversions I can create, the better my chances are she'll remain clueless...

Yes but why the cafe has to be on Makariou? They could make it somewhere that rent is cheaper! They make it on Makariou because some people go there just to be seen.

As a younger man , always told my girlfriend , my wife now , that if I needed a coffee and had a choice of coffee houses one charging (in today's money ) a pound and the other five I would go to the £5 coffee house , in middle age I changed it to the £1 coffee shop , and at 60 I would rather have it at home ! My favourite coffee is the Turkish coffee , that none can make as good as I can . Boring being an old sod sometimes but very enjoyable.
Do prefer the 5 star hotels though the comfort is of the utmost importance as you get older. My favourite Cyprus hotel is the Amathus in Limassol and the Coral Bay in Paphos.

Sorry Sotos I live in Nicosia so I was a bit carry away. But ok you are true you can find other coffee shops and very good one away from Makariou. But let’s put it that way just to get my point. If you had as the only option Makariou what you were going to do? How much you were going to sell the coffee?

Let me tell you something. When you are the person who pays, you want it cheaper and you say if I was the owner I was going to offer a cheaper coffee and I was going to attract more customers. But those are just words just to moan about the price. But if you are the owner you were going to say that you dont have to chase your customers really, because Makariou is the favourite area for coffee for lots of Cypriots so I will offer a coffee as expensive as everybody else does.

And another thing. Do you know how many Cypriots are willing to pay as much as the can for their coffee, not just to have the best coffee, because it might be crap, but just to show off them selves? Not exactly as you said just to be seen but to be able to say to everybody that its going to ask them that he is going to the best places…and lots of idiots Cypriots think that expensive=best!!!

The one and only time I was charged £1 for a metrio (in Makarios Avenue but well out from the chic areas!), the quality was atrocious. I complained bitterly about both quality and price but got nowhere, of course. As I was frequently in that neighbourhood for professional reasons, I hunted round and found a little coffee shop not 100 m from the other one, down a side street. I paid £0.40 there, for an excellent quality coffee. Guess which one I frequented thereafter? High rents or not, I still have enough of my Scottish upbringing to complain when being ripped off.
