Visit North Cyprus, says Lib Dem MEP

A LIBERAL Democrat member of the EU parliament has urged British tourists to visit North Cyprus and petition the Prime Minister for direct flight.

Chris Davies MEP is encouraging visitors to Cyprus to sign the direct flights petition currently racking up the signatures on Tony Blair’s Downing Street website.

The Euro-MP asked holidaymakers from the North West "to give a helping hand to a part of Europe kept trapped in a timewarp by a 30-year old dispute."

Mr Davies said: "To have allowed Cyprus to join the EU while the island was still divided was a major policy blunder. Now the Greek Cypriots are using their veto to prevent the rest of Europe lifting the burden on their Turkish Cypriot neighbours.

"Sense will only prevail when the economic stranglehold is lifted. British tourists can help by taking a holiday in the north and by signing a petition on the Downing Street website."

A spokesman for Turkish Cypriot human rights group Embargoed! said: "Mr Davies is one of a growing number of Liberal Democrat Councillors, MPs, MEPs and Lords who have taken the time to study the Cyprus issue and reach an informed opinion on the way forward.

"Unfortunately, with the exception of a handful of individuals, the same initiative is not evident from the elected representatives of the two main political parties in the UK."

He went on: "Elected members of the Labour and Conservative Parties choose either to have no opinion on Cyprus or blindly to support the arguments of that Cypriot community which is in the majority in their constituency, even at the total exclusion of any communication with the other Cypriot community.

"The Turkish Cypriot community in the UK must take a more active role in local and national politics in the UK and urge their elected representatives to do more to help lift the isolation of northern Cyprus."

Oh, so I guess the 7,000 votes already signed to support direct Flights to Ercan, won't be enough after all. If the 100,000 Turkish Cypriots in the UK do not support it, by signing the petition, we really shouldn't expect the British to do it either.

Are you sure of the figure 100.000? I asked a prominent and politically involved TC chap about this recently and was told there were about 40.000 TC's in the UK.

BTW, all my family and friends have signed this petition. I emailed friends around the world to do the same.

My question to you is, have you signed it? Would you like direct flights to the TRNC?

Thank you in advance for your honest answer.

Kikapu , I think my dear friend mtfromng has a valid point here. There are around 250 thousand Cypriots in the UK , and I doubt if the T/C s amount to more than what mrfromng states. However , we are all Cypriots so there are 250 thousand of us over here.

Doesn't the children of Cypriots count as Cypriot in the UK, who have been born there.?

No, I did not signed it mrfromng. First of all, I have not seen it, secondly, it will not help solve the Cyprus problem, but instead, it will prolong it at the present course, which in the long run, it will not benefit the Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus. Once we agree on a lasting solution, we can have anything we want openly, and not through the "back door", at the pity of others.

How on Earth did we get 210,000 GC's in the UK, and only 40,000 TC's, when we had a head start on you guys, as far as leaving Cyprus after the 1963/64 problems. :?: :?:

Isnt it just one of the measures GCs have to take to crreate a level playing field, them giving it to us of their own free will serve them better in the long run otherwise if we have to fight for it we will tell them to fuck off as we do not have an any agreement to unite.

Well of course VP, but what do we give them in return. How about proposing to them, that the crossings will be dismantled, as soon as the First International plane, other than Turkish Airlines, touches down, and the first ship docks at Famagusta. Then from there, we start removing the Turkish Troops, then so on and so on, with them giving us more and more, until the playing field is levelled.

I'm not worried about anything. Why do we waste so much time and energy to get what we want through the "back door" when we can try to open and walk through the "front door" instead.
