I paid £50 for my 1936 Hillman Minx, but that was a lot of lolly in those days, when the average income was about £350/year and a new Ford Popular cost about £150.
Even as late as 1963, I bought a new Hillman Minx 1600 for only £400 (export model), the version after the one with the curly tail fin. That was when the average salary was ~£1000. Unfortunately, this model was the first of the releases after Chrysler bought out the Rootes Group (Hillman, Humber, Sunbeam, Singer) and it was the first of the crap cars that led the group into bankruptcy, along with the Hillman Imp which was the world's worst car, ever. I had previously a 1957 Minx which was a really great car.
My dream car of the early 1960s was the Jensen FF. FF stood for Ferguson Formula. It was the first car with permanent four-wheel drive and with ABS, yes, over 40 years ago and was considered the safest performance car on the road.
Today, I aspire to a Honda Civic Hybrid and I ordered one several months ago, but it won't be delivered for several months, yet. However, it costs a wee bittie more than my 1936 Hillman Minx!
