fridge freezers

Postby sandalex » Sun Feb 11, 2007 4:46 pm

Good Day ladies and gentlemen;
As relative newcomers to the Forum, and not yet resident in Cyprus, we pop up occasionally with (probably) silly questions. We are currently discussing what to ship and what not to ship, and the item in question is a fridge freezer (subject was a bit of a giveaway, wasn't it?). Does anybody have any practical experience of how well, or not, refrigeration equipment travels? Logic suggests that it could be a very risky thing to do, but the economics make me wonder. Any experiences or practical suggestions would be welcome. Thank you

Hi there, Don't know about if it makes sense financially to ship one over, but if you do make sure it is transported upright, protect the coil on the back and once it's where you want it let it stand for about a day to let the oil in the compressor settle.

Thanks Joff - the need for that sort of care was what made me think it might be inadvisable. You have reinforced my thoughts.
You reckon it might not be financially worth it. I confess to ignorance of costs of these things in Cyprus, and have not yet seen another model anywhere which fits my equirements as well as the one I have.
The Hell with it, I'll leave it.
Thanks again.

Also worth thinking about is that you might need a larger fridge here… You’ll have loads of cold drinks, fresh produce and of course a huge water melon when they are in season.

We bought a huge American style thing but have added an extra freezer and are investing in a beer fridge too. ;-)

I agree with Grunp, the bigger the better; I have an Amercian jobbie with chilled water and crushed ice dispensor etc. Aloso, your firdge may not be tropically rated; don't forget they have to work in much higher temperatures thasn in the UK, if that is where you are from.

Why do girls always say bigger is better? everyone knows it is the way you use It

The tropical rating is rubbish (remember most, if not all of america is not tropical) it is just a way to make you pay more, but some asian ones are difficut (if not impossible) to repair and most 'american' products are made there (asia)

I brought mine from OZ had no problems

I am not sure of the tropical rating of the various states of the US, but what i do know is that Cyprus gets a bit warm in the summer!

OK - that worked. I'm undecided again!

Thanks, everybody. It's really great to be able to get reactions from a variety of people: it rules out vested interests. (So we don't have any white goods traders on the Forum?)

Yes. we are coming from the UK, so that should be OK if Oz was OK.
Re tropicalisation: for a brief period I worked for an engineering company, and tropicalisation was not to protect from heat specifically, but from extreme humidity. This may not be a definitive statement.

Cheers

I’ll help…

Dump your stupid fridge freezer and buy another one here.

OK?

Humidity should not be a problem, the heat from the compressor should deal with the condensation generated. Have only worked on Uk A/c and some refrigeration, but as in air conditioning you would need a more powerful unit in Cyprus to cope compared with the Uk's (generally) cooler climate. And as it's all the same principle (just exchange food for humans) the cooling capacity might be greater on a "Tropically Rated" Fridge Freezer.
Hope this helps.
