MPEG-2 is already being replaced. Most high-def cams use MPEG-2 as an interim measure, but HD-DVD and BluRay discs don't. They use MPEG-4 or H.264 compression and it's possible that standard definition DVDs may go in this direction, as well, although there may be compatibility issues. Why do I say this? Well if you look
here, you will see that the players now offer DivX playback. Well, DivX is a high compression implementation of MPEG-4. I think the writing is on the wall that MPEG-2 will be eventually replaced for new applications, in which case the SD DVD, as we know it today, will follow the way of VHS and slowly disappear. What is holding things back is the format war between HD-DVD and BluRay. Until this is settled, most consumers will not invest in either because there will be insufficient economy of scale to bring the prices down.
