Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Agreed.

I bought one on a whim many years ago before a family holiday to Florida. The technology was amazing (VHS-C at the time) but I felt uncomfortable using it, missed out on things I wish I’d been involved in (because I was filming) and have never watched the tapes…

MPEG-2 is already being replaced. Most high-def cams use MPEG-2 as an interim measure, but HD-DVD and BluRay discs don't. They use MPEG-4 or H.264 compression and it's possible that standard definition DVDs may go in this direction, as well, although there may be compatibility issues. Why do I say this? Well if you look here, you will see that the players now offer DivX playback. Well, DivX is a high compression implementation of MPEG-4. I think the writing is on the wall that MPEG-2 will be eventually replaced for new applications, in which case the SD DVD, as we know it today, will follow the way of VHS and slowly disappear. What is holding things back is the format war between HD-DVD and BluRay. Until this is settled, most consumers will not invest in either because there will be insufficient economy of scale to bring the prices down.

And the quality, especially with fast movements? Yes, I can argue with it.

No worse than watching on digital satellite (also mpeg4), and for most films thats not an issue...

If the film has been multipass encoded to a decent bit rate and resolution (HDTV) the quality is perfectly good enough for a TV...

Luckily I have a HDTV TV and HDTV Xvid player

:P
