Can anyone please confirm what times women are allowed to enter the above mentioned Monastery. It always used to be between noon and 1pm during winter (and noon-3pm in summer) not sure if things have changed..

anyone know?

Nevermind, just found lots of websites confirming that women are not allowed in at all.. although i did find one that confirmed the above times.. 9 out of 10 said no entry for women.. so guess i'll go with that.

Women have not been allowed in since about 1990. Although I remember going up about 1995 in January and the views were amazing, well worth the drive. We were allowed into the chapel outside.

I visited the Stavrovouni Monastery with a young lady, she was a little disgruntled about not being allowed inside, we had previously visited the Kykkos Monastery and she could not comprehend the difference of opinion.

I spoke to one of the Monks on the subject, his response was that he was in the monastery to get away from women!!, I think he was only there temporarily, maybe he was the victim of some unfortunate encounter, I did not press the issue.

Women are not allowed in Stavrovouni and if i am not wrong is the only one in Cyprus that doesnt allow females to enter to the monastery. They are allowed only in a small church close to the monastery. Monasteries like Kykkos, Maxairas, Trooditisa, Arxaggelos, Saint George, Saint Neofutou which I have visited...accept women decent dressed.

The monks believe that women shouldn't enter the monastery because they are monks and women can make them sin. Also they believe that shower is part of a sin so they smell bad...They have shower very rare. That is not very pleasant especially for women.

My wife & I both visited Stavrovouni in the late 80s - in those days, women were allowed to enter on one day of the year - and by fortunate coincidence, we were on holiday here at the time.

But women are no longer allowed to enter. I belive this happened when a new Abbott? took over.

hey LENA. I wonder if your friend's brother was the Monk I spoke to?, he was wearing a dark habit and sported a beard, he did say he was avoiding the company of women, but it may be that he was avoiding the possibility of being 'Taxed' on the length of his whiskers.

Hey Eliko you shouldn't make fun of the Monks...I am not very religious person but I do respect them. And I wasnt joking about that. You know for the parents its quite difficult to accept that. They cant see him every day as the rest of their children...especially his mother...and see him getting married, having children etc. And to be honest I never saw him...I saw only his photos before and after his decision.
