A contract

Postby keren » Thu Feb 08, 2007 7:16 pm

Hi!
I found a really nice home in the village Moni (near limassol) for rent.
today we met the owner for the first time (it was through an agent) and it was a disaster!!!
His condition that was the most important for us is that we will sign a 2 years contract without any way of breaking it.
Since we come from another country and we only just moved in, we don't want to make that kind of contract. What if something will happen and we will have to leave Cyprus? anyway at the end he agreed to think about our last offer- 2 years contract, 2 month in advance notice if we decide to leave and we must do the renovation ourselves.
what do you think about it? does it worth it? is it a normal thing to ask here in cyprus? are we being fooled by him?
by the way i forgot to mention that the rent itself is high- 500 CYP and its outside limasso!!! and not furnishes (as we asked and that we have pets (1 dog and 2 cats) and that i love the house, its perfect for me, its everything i was looking for (beside the distance from limassol)

Hi keren

This is an absolute rip-off!! Excuse my French but tell him to stuff it!

We rented a furnished, 200 sq.m. 3-bedroom house in Episkopi for CYP 300/month. It was a one year agreement, but either party could cancel by giving the other a months written notice. (We eventually stayed there for two years).

What's all this about "we must do the renovation ourselves"?

> are we being fooled by him?

I prefer to use the word conned.

Find somewhere else to live.

Cheers,

Wow! so many responses!! exelant, 10-x!
So now i have another Q: Everyone i speake to tells me it's not a good idea to look for alace on "the left side of the map" that means- from zakaki area to messe gitonia. they say it's populated mostly with locals and that if we have pets they will not take it as good as younger or europians will and that in those areas the chances for a neighbore to poison my pets is higher. what do you think about it?

I dont think it matters which area you choose this will be still a risk (poisoning) and if you have to sign a contract for 1 to 2 years it will be hard to move for their welfare So do your research

I agree with the area thing, but thats why its cheaper. But stay away from Moni and Pyrgos as you will find that most prices are wayyyy over priced. I know its daunting to look for something on your own but stay away from the agents!!, you may find that the man from Moni only wanted something like 350 a month, and the agent bumped it up, plus the fact that the agent will receive the first months rent for himself for his fee. The golden oppertunities paper as mentioned above is good, also try the Cyprus weekly aswell. Good luck
