It wasn't even that big of a deal, he just connected the mobile via USB with a PC using registered software from the manufacturer and the whole process took something like 5 minutes.

That's good you got it all sorted in the end.
What sort of phone was it then agnostos_x?

It is a Sony Ericsson K750i.

I buy things from abroad too. But what if you are unlucky and you get a defective product? Once I got a book from Amazon and the CD inside was broken. I could have returned it and wait for a replacement but that was too much time and trouble. Buying from abroad is cheaper but I think it has more risks.

Thats true sotos, it is risky. I guess one has to take into account the risks and benefits for each transaction separately.
But here is a nice question:
I now want to buy an LCD tv set. I actually know which model I want to buy, the Samsung LE32R71B. The cheapest price I got from stores in Cyprus is £700. I can buy it online from pixmania for £487 (including tax and delivery charges) with 2 years of warranty. For £35,02 I can even insure the TV for one year.
So ok now I know in case of fault or warranty issues I will be incovinienced since I will have to send it to Greece. But then again the difference on the price is quite big.
So what would you prefer? Buy from Cyprus for a higher price or accept the inconvenience factor and buy online?

I believe that a company that intentionally provides faulty goods , or reluctant to put things right when a warranty claim arises should be warned of exposure in writing by the complainant clearly stating his/her reasons of complain. As a businessman running my own store as well as an on line site , it is inevitable that from the thousands of different lines we sell something goes wrong at some stage . Our policy has always been to treat every claim on its merits and always give the customer the benefit of the doubt, hard sometimes when on a Friday someone purchases a Hot Water Boiler and brings back on Monday demanding a refund on the grounds that the product was not working. We know why and play ball , it doesn't happen that often. As far shopping in Cyprus , I have never experienced any problems but perhaps I'm one of the lucky ones.

I might be one of the unlucky ones :D. But ok my intention is not to criticize companies in Cyprus. The only reason I am talking about Cyprus specifically is because I live in Cyprus now and I shop here.

Empirically speaking I can see a difference on the level of professionalism with
many Cypriot companies when comparing with the USA and the UK, at least on the area of support. If one thing most companies (at least smaller companies which is a big portion of the shopping industry in Cyprus) have poor procedure for acquiring feedback from their customers. Again this is just my opinion and speaking only on personal experience, it is not my intention to offend anyone.

Would love to know company. Have major problems with my sons phone (same model) supposedly under guarantee. Claimed it had been dropped too many times, then it was water damage, then told it was from sweat. Wanted thirty some pounds to fix etc etc. Eventually they just sent phone back to shop where I had bought it and refused to take it further.
I defy anyone in Cyprus to hold a phone to their ear in summer without getting a bit sweaty. Anyone else any problems with Sony Erricson repairs?

It seems that the policy with Sony Ericsson is that after 4 months any hardware problem is considered as damage to the phone... At least that's what the maintenance guy told me at the store. That is why they say that the customer is responsible if the phone's hardware (keypad and so on ) is damaged after 4 months have passed from the purchase.

I ordered a few things from Pixmania and they seem like a reliable shop. Their delivery is very fast and cheap also. For that price difference I would go with pixmania!
