The New Dog Law

Postby Alassa » Mon Feb 05, 2007 11:54 am

Hi

Does anyone know anything about the new dog law supposedly coming into effect (or possibly meant to be already in effect?). Where can I read about it.

Not really looking for a discussion on whether it works or not and noisy dogs etc keeping the neighbours awake all night. Just want to read the law for myself as a dog owner.

Thanks

Don't know where you can read it. As an owner you must put up a warning sign that you have a dog, get them microchipped and licenced with the municipality.

Thanks, what I'm specifically interested in is the number of dogs you are legally allowed to own - if anyone knows?

We are bringing 2 dogs over in July. How quickly do I need to get them registered?

I did read that the new law involves the fact that prosecution against vicious dogs can be handled more easily rather than anything about regular pets.

Thanks

I'd get them registered asap. If they get out and are picked up they will be located back to you that much quicker....in theory!

And if they are picked up without a Cyprus registered chip, they may be impounded. If they are chipped elsewhere, I imagine there is a method to re-register them here, rather than having them re-chipped.

I don't think there is a limit to the number of dogs you can own, provided each is chipped and registered. Chipping costs ~£30 a time and registering the chip with the Vet Service costs £5 per dog (or it did with our dog). I think the licence is now £15/y/dog, if I remember right, and £100 if the dog is a "dangerous" type, but not of a proscribed race.

Pity there isn't an equivalent cat law.

The only thing I can say for sure about the new law is that it will be ignored by most Cypriots.
