more and more threats

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I agree that the TC's should benefit from the oil...

Once, and only once, they recognise the authority of the owners, the govt of the RoC, and they return the land that does not belong to them...

Simple as really...

If they decide to get heavy handed, then you will see why it is good to have a British population and SBA's.... And a lejitimate membership of the EU...

If you live in a country which is treated as a part of Turkey, you cannot benefit from the oil owned by Cyprus, time to make a choice TC's..

Cheep and pointless shot. My family are moving back and when my children have grown up and finished their schooling so will I.

Greek Cypriots can't be given everything
Ilnur Cevik

[email protected]03 February 2007

The Greek Cypriots have made too many advances at the cost of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots over the past year and it's time that someone told them enough is enough and if they insist on this one-way alley they will really get into trouble.

You can push Turkey into a corner, you can subject the Turkish Cypriots to numerous injustices and humiliate the Ankara government in the European Union, but there has to be a limit and we see that we have reached this point…

The Greek Cypriots have been the intransigent side rejecting the Annan plan for Cyprus in the 2004 referendum, and yet they were generously rewarded. They are now full members of the EU and are effectively blocking Turkey's membership by shelving the accession talks. They have also managed successfully to force the EU to renege on its promises to lift the isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriots…

But it seems the Greek Cypriots simply do not understand that they have gone too far, and none of their big brothers in Athens or in the EU capitals are warning them. So they seem to be carrying their efforts to gain more by handing out oil prospecting rights to foreign countries.

The Greek Cypriots are prospering under the EU flag. They are using the EU effectively against Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots, so what more do they want?

Turkey has strongly objected to the Greek Cypriot move and has served notice that it will no longer accept such a fait accompli. It has now sent warships to Cyprus to serve notice of its determination.

Turkey said it will make an effort to convince the Turkish Cypriots to do more than the Greek Cypriots to facilitate a solution on Cyprus. But it is clear that the Greek Cypriots are not interested and feel that time is on their side and they can simply toy with Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots.

The EU has let down the Erdogan administration by paying great lip service to the Greek Cypriots. This has also hurt the popularity of the government and helped the rise of extremist nationalism in Turkey.

We have seen what blind nationalism can do in recent events in Turkey. The Turkish people are in no mood to tolerate the whims of a handful of Greek Cypriots, and this is pushing us into dangerous waters. Added to this is the fact that this is an elections year in Turkey, and the Greek Cypriots should see that every party is playing for nationalist votes… They have make themselves the target of the nationalist tide.

Our Greek friends in Athens have to see the dangers on the horizon and talk some sense into the Greek Cypriot leaders.

Shah,

You got to be a little careful, as to which Nation you say you belong to, because not all South Americans have access to the oil, from oil rich Venezuela. But I'm sure, as a Turkish Cypriot, you will be allowed to get some benefits from the oil money, by driving your car on brand new highways, better schools, bigger and better hospitals, but you can only claim all this, as a Cypriot in the RoC. Since you claim the "TRNC" being a separate Nation, I don't see Venezuela sending any oil money to the "TRNC", or am I missing something.

oil, if used wisely it could help a solution.
first , if there is indeed some , it could solve the financial problem of a solution.

rolandis idea might not be that bad after all. besides security , it could provide a significant carrot for the tc community in negotiations.....

on the other hand it could also make us more arrogant....

dont know what to think any more...

Just suppose there turned out to be no oil south of Cyprus but loads just off the the north coast, would the TCs and Turkey squabble over who it belonged to? Would the TCs threaten Turkey with war? Would the TCs offer the GCs a share their oil? Would The GCs help defend the TCs against mainland oil pirates, the mind boggles!

Seriously though, what the hell has Cypriot oil got to do with Turkey. If the TRNC considers itelf an independent country how can it claim rights over the ROC's oil assets. It may be of concern to the TRNC but where in the Treaty of Guarantee is Turkey given the right to intervene in offshore mineral rights?
