Phone problem

Postby Svetlana » Fri Feb 02, 2007 2:26 pm

Can anyone advise me on what to do; I have a 3G phone (Cyta network) and the calls keep dropping out. One theory I have, is that it is logging on to a 3G network, which has poor signal coverage. This theory could be total rubbish as I really do not know aht I am talking about!

Currently, the 'Network Selection' is 'Auto', would 'GSM' or 'WCDMA' be better?

Currently, the 'Select your GSM/UMTS band is 'Auto', would
GSM (900+1800)+UMTS(2100) or
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850) or
UMTS (2100+800) be better?

This question probably sums up my ignorance of the subject LOL!
BTW what does UMTS and WCDA mean, in simple terms?

thanks

Lana, i'm having the same problem with my mobile.. i can barely get any network coverage at all.. am using my old mobile now and have full 4 bars of signal.. but the new one, I'd be lucky if i had 1 bar of signal.. I was advised to take it back to place where i bought it in Larnaca as someone thought maybe the internal antenna had gone.. i don't know, haven't done anything about yet as been busy at work. does yours show no signal? or are you just getting cut off mid-conversation?.. mine is cutting out when speaking too..

Basically the 3G of CYTA is crap, it needs a lot of work to become stable and a lot of people have problems. It is not because of weak signal but more because of the configuration and incompatibility between the RNC and the core network that is 10 yrs. old (for those who understand).

Anyway I advise you to put your mobile phone to GSM only and not auto (WCDMA or UMTS is 3G). This way you force your phone to use only the 2G network and thus have better quality of service. You will not be able to make video calls and take advantage of the 384kbps data speed but I guess you do not use them.

I had to go to (well chose to) the UK to get my phone - and CYTA could not even set it up for web-access and MMS, as they had not seen one before.

The signal strnegth indicator is quiet small, so I do not know if I am experiencing a weak signal; there was no problem on my previous non 3G phone.

Thanks for the advice, I will switch to GSM.

But what does UMTS etc stand for, please?

Hi Lana, I sent you a PM which should hopefully answer all your questions about mobile phones (and will probably raise some new ones as well!)

UMTS : UNIVERSAL MOBILE TELEPHONE SYSTEM aka 3G
UMTS-2100 : 3G working at 2.1GHz standard at Europe
WCDMA: WIDEBAND CHANNEL DIVISION MULTIPLEXING is the radio multiplexing technique used by UMTS
GSM : Global System for Mobile Comms aka 2G or 2.5G
GSM-900,1800 : 2G working at 900MHz and 1.8GHz respectively
GPRS: General Packet Radio System, system for data transfer over GSM

you want more I got a few thousands....

ps: I am a qualified electronics/telecommunications engineer

Hi Svetlana

I use a Areeba data card in my laptop as we don't have a phone line YET...

On the Northside of the house I have a very low signal, and the internet will very often 'drop'.

On the Southside the signal is great!!!

I just can't wait to get a phone line..............
